From FD to RX8? Did you make the right decision?

As far as the exhaust was concerned. It had a catback and a cat on it. The stock exhaust on the FD is very restrictive, and opening it up frees up a fair amount of HP. For example swapping the cat for a midpipe can create 20-30 hp depending up on the car. This simple catback combined w/ a down pipe allowed the boost to creep to higher than stock levels, which is not good on the stock ECU. The stock ecu can handle 11-12 psi in the transition of the turbos, but that is it. Once above 5K you need to keep the car at 10psi or less.
The FD is a great car and can be driven daily or across country despite what some may say. I have done it with several of them.

FD will dominate a FC all day. THere is just so much more in the design of the car and parts availability for it.

FCs are great because they are cheap and you can own a bunch of them without breaking the bank. They may not be the fastest on the track but they are fun cars. They still have a strong following for a reason. They are very cheap to own since people sell the parts for dirt cheap. I personally think FBs are cooler.
BTW I've also seen people run without undertrays fine. I wouldn't though.

Sorry just saw this again. The radiator on the FD sits at about a 45* (/ like so)angle toward the nose of the car. When there is no undertray on the vehicle the air does not go through the rad. It simply hits it and is forced underneath the car and does not allow proper cooling.

While we on the modding subject for those of you that had FDs I need to know the quietest exhaust combo you can do. I dont want to be loud with this car because im sure its a unwanted attention catcher. Every video I watch are way too loud.
As a matter of fact I may have to DD it until I can buy a clunker DD. If the FD is down I have cars available for me to borrow. As long as compression test and turbo test check out it should be able to last me long enough until I can get another DD.

my friend had a FB while he was funding his suby build, And wow he bought it for 900, changed spark plugs and the cat and it ran really well. It had 180k on the clock with the orginal motor! He was sad to sell it when the suby was done though. Id personally restore a RX3 if I ever got my hands on one.

Last note, I was thinking of buying a FD rolling shell and build it little by little, at least I would know what was changed/replaced and what needs attention soon and everything clean.

Hello, I couldn't find a thread of this when I searched which surprised me. Those of you that went from FD to RX8 was it the right decision/choice?
Every few months or so I always get the idea in my head of selling/trading the 8 but I never could. Because I always liked the way it looked, the handling, the feel and smooth engine. I came from a boosted platform and I miss playing with boost (Turbo spool is a addicting sound). I did a ton of research on boosting the 8, I always have a tendency to do it right so my build figures were around 6-8k with supporting mods.
Now, I see a couple FDs in the 10k and below range which got me thinking if I shall go down to an FD. I started doing FD research which seems like its easy to make them reliable, and their mods are relatively cheaper than ours. Their is a couple drawbacks as there is every car, but it wouldn't be my Daily Driver anyways. I do live in Cali so boosting the 8 isnt quite easy as well.
Thoughts?

if you think modding RX-8 is expensive, then don't even bother to go after FD. it will kill your wallet and you will mess it up.

very cheap to own? sure, if you planning to just get one and not doing anything to it.
I spent over 8K on my FC already. and yep, I got it for cheap. But having a 20 year old car requires a LOT of maintenance.

8k actually isn't that much but even still, you must be joking. You better have the best FC on the freaking planet. You can put 8k into any car but if you put 8k just to keep the FC running you are doing something wrong. You can put 8k into a good condition stock FD and it will be ready to run for a long time.

8k o_O, what all are u donig to it
funny when i first bought my 93 rx7 i didnt realize the factory cars had radiators similar to the rx8. Mine wasnt exactly stock though. Loved the twins on the car though they hit hard, mine were putting out around 15 psi. My only worry with my 7 is that its old and random crap breaks. Like my heater hose one day in the middle of no where made a pin hole leak drained all my coolant.

I've had good luck with my FC's - in fact I made a profit, even after maintenance, on my 91 vert. I love the look of the FD, and the performance speaks for itself, but I couldn't justify the amount of money that it would require. a N/A FC can be found for $2,000 in pretty decent condition, and although they won't touch the FD (or an RX-8 for that matter) in most categories, they are still super fun to drive.
My favorite RX-7 was my FB though, an 84 GSL-SE (since it has the 13B instead of the 12A) - that little car was outrageously fun, and I got more comments on it than any other car I've ever owned, including my 8.
Also, if you guys need a car to get you chicks, you're doing something wrong ;-)

Just remember most FDs/FCs will need to be redone from the ground up and its not like those car shows where parts are cheap and readily available. Its a slow and painful build.
FYI, The FD is a **** magnet more than anything.

Girls complement my 8 and I find guys standing at my FD when I walk up to it. The FD is more fun to drive, however the 8 is easier to drive at its limit.

I made a custom 3in with a dynomax vt on the very end magnaflow middle, car had no cats and 3 from engine back, was decent quiet. I also vote for the racing beat for simple and quiet
The one i drove with the 3in(magnaflow muffler in the middle) to a 3.75 gready rear had awicked sound though always put a smile on my face

I ran an RB single and now running duals. I'm pretty sure they are the quietest aftermarket exhaust you can buy. I recently changed over to RB duals + bonez high flow cat. It's uhhh, much louder to say the least and it drones . Car does sound great though.

The thing is what I wanted to do to the 8 would be more money than its worth, I figured it would be 10k+ in mods. If you read the first few posts I was saying I miss having a turbo'd car, so I turned to the FD because I dont like the 8 being boosted, not very reliable.

I agree the FD is a **** magnet, a lot of people like the FD for what it is and we all know that. I do get a ton of chicks liking the 8 though, I dont think they really like the FD though.

So Racing Beat catback, but every midpipe would make it really loud right? Unless theirs a dual resonated one I suppose. Sorry for the multiple posts, I dont know how to quote 3 posts into one post.

See the button w/ the '' click on it for the people you want to multi and when you get to the last one click quote.
If you pick up a FD roller and need engine services let me know as I have FD cores on hand to build off currently and will help you set it up properly.

Ill keep you in mind for the motor build. Would be nice if I can find a roller with just a blown motor and have it rebuilt. Cant wait to get this all getting underway. I was going to pull a loan for a really clean FD but I dont think that will be ideal, well a lot of people say against it.

might talk to charles at BHR he made a custom 4in resonator for my 7. I havent been able to install it yet due to complications on my build. e85, use a metal fuel filter paper based falls apart. Also keep adding crap to my build, have 2 skylines and 3 other rx7s waiting for my car to be done lol.
