the fake manual

i have an automatic rx-8. I came home today to find out my mom took my rx8. she doesn't remember if she moved the stick to the right to have automatic. I am worried she was driving around with 7000-9000rpm. Does mazda have a safety feature for incidents like these?

lol. She wouldn't of been able to get over 35 mph then without up-shifting (assuming the gear ratios are similar to the MT). Do AT's have fuel cut-off in manual mode?

And there shouldn't be anything to worry about...except how much sooner you'll be at the gas station.

I have a MT car. Doesn't the AT car have a 7K rpm rev limiter. I didn't think it could go to 9K.

Even if she was redlining the car the whole way, rotaries aren't nearly as damaged by this as piston engines. It'll be fine.

And next time, hide the keys.

You should have her tazered. I hear those things will even take down a 5 year old.

But seriously, give your mom some credit. She has been driving since before you were born. I would think she would know better than to drive your car at redline.

As I seem to recall its not the engine that will be hurt be hitting 9k rpm but rather the tranny. I seem to recall mazda saying they don't have any autos that can handle that kind of speed hence the smaller redline.

Well unless your mother is a complete moron if she put it in triptronic mode I'm pretty sure she would of figured out how to shift the car into the next gear. The Up and the + symbol on the steering wheel alone should hopefully of tipped her off lol. Also for her to push the stick to the left to slip it into triptronic I think she would of remembered. Stop freaking out and hide your keys man. Oh and I agree.. call the cops on your mom next time!

Yep, it's called getting an MT so your mom can't drive it

The RX-8 doesn't have an override? Some tiptronic boxes will shift if you exceed the redline by any amount..

She knows how to drive an 8, wound out, the 8 loves it I hit the fuel cut off 9500 rpm's with the stick frequently. I have 28,000 miles on and it runs great. The auto tranny would have a problem before the engine would and unless she did it constantly for 20 minutes or more the tranny wouldn't even overheat.

Moms and your rx8 shouldn't mix. My mom tried to take my 8 out the day after I got it without asking me. She managed to stall it 3 times in the driveway without letting it warm up because she didn't ask me how to put it in reverse... starting in 6th gear doesn't work to well... Just really glad she didn't flood it and refuses to touch it now, lol.

Conversation btw Neilp4453 and mom:

Neil: Did you take my car out?
Mom: Yea, went to the store to get some milk. Neil, did you know that your car makes a loud beep noise when you get to about 35mph and then won't go any faster? I think you should have it checked out or return it
Neil: #$%%$#%#$ should have got MT #$%$%$#

I wouldn't worry about it though. Chances are, she had to shift to reverse and into park, so she was probably on the "right" side (ha ha you like my play on words there).

..that is after they're done buying it for you. Seriously, lighten up. Chances are your mother isn't a complete idiot, and would realize something is wrong if she wasn't able to go above 30 and the engine was cutting off. Maybe if you're so worried about her breaking it you should get her to buy you something safer, like maybe a Cavelier?
