most OE dampers (struts/shock absorbers) should be replaced around 30-40k as they tend to be the cheapest pieces of junk they can get by with; sloppy internals, piston bleed-by, crappy valving, etc.

hell, be happy you passed emissions man. but if its that much of the hassle just go to a personal one and pay the $70, they'll usually help to for smaller issues (tint, lights, etc.)

Yeah, also Chrism said it right, paying a dude $70 bucks is worth it instead of failing and going back and possibly failing for something else. And I also have to talk to my dealer about this garbage about my tail lights not having these stupid code. ahhh

I dunno about NJ but in NYC I can just go any of the NYS Registered garage to have them check. Inspection station in NYC(at least the ones I've been to) dont really care they just gonna pass pass pass pass pass (keep pressing P on the computer) .... but they will at least tell you what you should change (want more business)

kinda lousy if u ask me, cuz I've seen so many thread-less tire cars walk out with a brand new inspection sticker ...

Emission is different story tho. I have one more year to go before I have to do the sniff check ... no sweat tho, I have no turbo/sc and I have CAT. so Im good !

but Chizz .... I'm with you on this one. It really suck when something like that happen. Most of the ppl who work for the government just want to be an *** because they will not fired for having *bad service/bad temper*. That sound like what happened to me when I was at DEP couple months ago. That fat bitch was giving me **** about my water bill (it showed that I used 1K worth of water, I dont have leaks or whatever so get the fuxk outa here), I was talking with her for 1/2 hour then she was annoyed or something and start raising her voice. So I raise mine and asked for supervisor. PoS go suck it. (in the end it was a computer *glitch*)

I went and opened my trunk and to the left of the trunk lock on the black plastic part of the taillight housing are the letters D.O.T. The letters also are on the same area of the drivers side light. Keep this in mind next time you go.

There it is, thanks Expo. The D.O.T stands for division of transportation because all stock lights have to be checked with them and they code it, which was needed to pass the inspection.

wow!?! Florida has no inspection of any kind

Dear Sir;

The Department of Transportation received your e-mail regarding motor vehicle inspections and asked us to respond.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your inquiry. The State of Florida does not have a mandatory motor vehicle inspection program. A motor vehicle safety inspection program has not been authorized since Florida's original motor vehicle safety inspection was abolished in 1981. There have been a few bills filed for this purpose, but, no laws have been passed.

Florida law does address the safety of vehicles on Florida highways and provides enforcement authority. Florida law allows a police officer to stop vehicles believed to be unsafe or not equipped as required by law and submit the vehicle to an inspection. Florida law also allows officers to require proper repair and adjustment within 48 hours if the vehicle doesn't present a hazard. However, if the vehicle is found to be in unsafe condition and operation would present an unduly hazardous condition, the officer may require the vehicle to be immediately repaired or removed from use. The requirements of law may be found in Florida Statutes, 316.610(1) and (2).

Florida’s Motor Vehicle Inspection Program (MVIP) was abolished, effective July 1, 2000, based on information from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) that clean air standards had been met and the program was unnecessary. DEP staff determined the four southern counties subject to the inspection program were in compliance with the federal ozone standard and would continue to be in compliance with this standard without the inspection program.

In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that Florida demonstrated it could maintain required air quality standards without the inspection program. Any action that would require the motor vehicle emissions inspection program to be reinstated would have to be enacted by the Florida legislature.

Hopefully, the information provided adequately addresses your inquiry.

Sincerely,

William H. Rankin, Chief

Bureau of Field Operations

Division of Motor Vehicles

Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles

I would take a video camera with me next time - and tape the whole process. Tell them you are doing a paper on "Safety" and since the RX8 is one of the safest vehicles on the road, you thought it would be cool to video your inspection.

LOL

If I had seen this thread a few days ago, I could have saved you the trouble. No inspection necessary. There's also no INCOME tax in FL - which is why just about every athlete in the country has a home there.

It would be the best state in the country if it weren't for all those damn old people!

just take the RX8 brochure in when you inspect the car. If there is an issue, show him the tail lights in the brochure so the idiot can see thier standard...

I like my states with mountains AND ocean. And curvy roads. And the only inspection is for emissions, which means they just check your OBDII for codes and let you go.
