Extra Warrantee?
Have you considered buying extra powertrain warrantee? (from Mazda, or others?)
Extended warantee is something I usually avoid like the plague, on appliances or electronics, (who wants their three year old VCR fixed? A new one for $80 at WallyMart is a better deal!) but I figure a rotary that still has a couple of years of factory powertrain coverage is going to sell much better than my assurances that it is 'good for years, yet'!!
The average used car buyer is likely to be shy of high performance cars anyway, and any warranty that is left when I pass it on will go a long way to settling the deal.
Don't get me wrong, I still think it is a waste of money up front, but from a purely 'resale' perspective it looks like a good payout.
I checked the dealer, and of course they have no idea how much the extra would be, but basing it on a worst-case comparison (Millenia) it should be around $1300/canadian, maybe $900US?
I can easily see it paying out as a used car by that much....(and if worst comes to worst....no, lets not go there!)

I'm interested in extended warranty, but am wondering if there is other companies that would provide it. For example, when I bought my Jetta, I could get it through VW or through another company that covered different stuff (less powertrain, more accessory stuff) for a little bit less. Does Mazda have a standard extended warranty plan?

Mazda Extended Warranty
While I can't say with total certainty that Mazda wil offer an extended warranty with the RX-8, I will be very surprised if they don't. We bought my wife Linda anew Mazda6 at the ned of December last year and bought the Mazda Extented Warranty Plan. It was about $960.00 as I recall for a 70,000, 7 Year Plan. Linda does not rack up a lot of millage so it was the time element that was most important.
I tend to turn my cars more often and do not buy extended warranties for mine.

I know NA rotary are bullet proof but I'm going to get the ext war just in case. Mazda put it tons of R&D into the RENESIS over the years but regarless this is the first production year of a new engine and body.

Also, you have up until your factory warranty expires, or close at least, to purchase the extended warranty, right?

option to buy..
The way it was explained to me was that if you had bought some kind of warranty, maybe powertrain only, for one or two years, it kept open your option to go all out 'bumper-to-bumper' for up to an additional seven years.
But that could be smoke to get me buy a package...

In general purchasing an 'ew' is akin to placing a very expensive bet AGAINST your car - that is you are spending $ in the hopes that it will brake downa and thus the 'bet' pays off for you. It's a hideous cash-cow for the dealers and represents almost pure profit as they payouts on these 'insurance policies' is extremely low.
Nor does it enhance or add to a used cars value. Only specific major option packages and low miles add to a used car's value. Check your NADA book - no ad for such extra insurance packages.
You can always buy an EW right up to the end of the factory warranty term.
Such EWs are quite negotiable in price.
Still you're better off taking your money and hurling at the nearest gaming casino - their odds are quite a lot better.
Sure a few folks will pipe up w/ the usual 'well it paid off for me' anecdotes - but they are just that anecdotes. For every one of those - there's 99 others who don't come out ahead.
Further - in general Mazdas are pretty good cars w/ respect to repair history.
Good luck!
