Extended Warranty?

I have about 8500 miles left before the used RX-8 with 40,000 miles expires its warranty. Any hints or experiences regarding what company to choose? My dealer, Brown's Mazda in Alexandria Va, wants me to buy the Fidelity Warranty Services, INC one, probably the Platinum line.

Are these things worth the $2000.00 for the 36,000 miles / 3 year coverage?

My car seems to be running fine, although, it does have the "normal" whirl sound with the clutch out and the gears seem to shift fine, yet 1,2 and 3 makes a noise when shifting into them.

What are your thoughts? what I should do? I am a 2 week old Rx-8 owner!

Thanks

Justin

Ok since no one responded I did some research and caved. I went with the dealer's advice and bought the Platinum Fidelity 4/48000 mile coverage. Just in case!

Any thoughts?

some people are for it and some are against it. i went with the Mazda extended plan when I bought the car. I personally think it will help if you are trying to resell the car later on. The one hit that I have had on my car said that the ext. warranty was a deciding factor.

I opted for after market coverage. I actually wanted the warranty from mazda but was told they dont offer extended warranty coverage once the car is purchased (go figure). Anyways. I did alot of research online and found that warranty direct is the best one. They have been around for many years. I got full coverage for 5 years/100000 miles for 2400 dollars. Coverage starts after factory warranty expires. In the event my car dies on me thhey cover free tows, free roadside assistance, free car rental, free hotel stay, and obviously any repairs bumper to bumper. I opted for a 50 dollar deductible although u can choose for a higher or lower one. They also alow monthly payments which r prorated in the event u dont want the service any longer. Its fully transferable to another owner assuming u sell the car later on in time which is a good selling point.

You do know that the 5 yrs and 100k includes the factory warranty, right? Coverage should start immediately on any such warranty, thus any features aboe and beyond the factory would be in use. (hotels, rentals, etc... )

I don't personally recommend non-factory warranties. The primary reason, and fidelity is one, as I have sold them in the past, is that they put in USED parts. Sometiems remanufactured, sometimes pulled from a junkyard, but never new. Factory warranties always specify the installation of a new factory part.
Additionally, I'd check with another dealer, becuase it's been a while, but I'm fairly certain Mazda's Protection Plans can be sold on used vehicles, still under factory warranty. BMW is the only one that I remember must be original owner.

im not following. What do u mean the warranty includes the factory one? I do realize that the aftermarket one doesnt take effect untill the factory warranty ends. I have less than 8K miles left on my factory warranty or until march of 08.
Now with regard to refurbished items being installed. i could care less. As long as the item works, im happy and if it breaks down then ill have them repair it again. Iv used refurbished parts in the past (not on the rx8) such as alternators, steering pumps, used ignition coils, ecu's etc..... and never had a problem. As a matter of fact, my friend had his alternator replaced at 70000 miles, his car now has roughly 125000 miles with no problems on the re manufactured one.
I dont know why used/re manufactured parts get such a bad rap. People have low mileage cars that break down all the time due to a malfunctioning oem part.
I dunno but maybe im just lucky with reconditioned components.
