esmeril kit vs mazda maniac's greddy upgrade?????

ok guys the time has come to put some serious power in my8. ive been wanting a turbo for the longest time

ive seen all the charts and horsepower ranges, and some reliability issues...

need some input form turbo owners

whats better

ESMERIL turbo kit - 6k$ - 400whp (if willing to go to 16psi which i think is asking for problems)

or

Greddy turbo kit - 4k + maniacs turbo upgrade 1k = 5k -???whp (more reliable?)

ohhhhhh and how much you think a good shop charges for install 1k?

Good shop should be able to install the whole thing about 1K + tuning.

Without speaking for MazdaManiac, I can fill in the gaps from my limited experience with his kit.

Esmeril advertises that their kit can produce 400whp out of the box. So far, I'm only aware of a single RX8 that is producing that kind of power with their kit and I'm unsure if it was an out of box kit or if additional equipment was needed. I would check around to see if anyone other than Esmeril has been able to do this.

The advertised power levels of the MazdaManiac upgrade is 310whp. This is considered to be an out of the box figure and is a power output that anyone can expect by bolting this kit on with proper tuning. I won't go into detail but I've seen dynographs with this kit well beyond 310whp. Anything beyond that, however, will require additional tuning and equipment upgrades.

My evaluation looking at videos of Esmeril's kit and having experience with MazdaManiac's vehicle on the street and the track lead me to believe that anything beyond 320whp is simply useless and unusuable in any kind of situation where the RX8 excels in. If you're looking for brute force drag racing ability you might be an exception.

I can't speak to the overall quaility of the kits because I've not had enough hands on experience to make a call one way or another. I would simply say to be realistic with your power goals and understand that more power means more things break and the car becomes harder to control both on the track and on the street.

well mazdamaniacs upgrade is basically a t6 turbo replacing the stock greddy shitty turbo and a few other parts,

im not surprised that the "400bhp" claimed by esmeril is a bit overkill and only with lots of modding,

im basically looking for the best solution to getting a range of 300-350 at the wheels, more than that i dont see usefull...

Flashwing: thanks for the info very helpful,

there is a rotary specialist shop here in maryland pfsupercars i heard has years exeprience with rx7s and they have done 3 and 4 rotor rx8s, so i will see what they say...

-------any other recommendations??

the greddy turbo is not "shitty"
it is a great turbo, but just needs a couple things worked out on it

there are a few upgrades that can be done to it so it will last longer and get you into that HP range you are looking for

search BNR or fluid motorsports greddy turbo upgrade

As MMs kit is no longer available the next best thing is to buy a Greddy kit and just upgrade the turbo along with a few other components that are not up to scratch. There are a couple of options available now for this.
I'm now at 320whp ish with the lesser of the greddy turbo upgrades available - see link below

Fluid motorsports or RX7 store are the two currently available. They both require that you have the stock Greddy and ship it to them for upgrading - both are good I think .

I can't confirm this Jedi, but there have been rumblings that once he's finished with his current orders that he's done.

Has the OP looked into the greddy upgrade from BNR?
