The cover is mostly for aesthetics, although there may be some slight airflow advantages to its use. You'll be fine without it, as is most everyone that uses an aftermarket CAI (where they must remove the cover for fitment reasons).
A lot of people take their's off with no problem..
I like the look of them and I believe they act as a heat shield to help keep your hood from getting too hot and maybe baking the paint.

You don't need to take the cover off to check the oil. Search for Nubo's excellent "Houdini dipstick maneuver" post.
If you take it off, save it to put back on the car when you sell it.

Ya my engine had to be replaced yesterday and the tech said it was because of the cover being removed, something about magnetic fields in it or something???
ps.. I'm just playing with you like others have said it has no real purpose except to look good.

DO NOT REMOVE THE ENGINE COVER!!
It holds the rods and pistons together, without it, you'll float a piston or maybe even risk blowing a cylinder! I've done it before, the dealership told me that was the reason!

cosmetic to hide the unpealing look of the engine to the average eye of most people...
as for Hidef1080 saying it might slowly burn the paint off the hood from the inside out, that sounds logical.
as for getting annoying from taking it off...it literaly takes 1 whole second. visversa, maybe a few times a month? lol
