It's hard to drive this car the way it's meant to be driven and get good MPG. Fuel economy and The Beep are mutually exclusive.
Isn't this in the wrong forum anyway? I was half expecting this thread to be a spammer pimping fuel line magnets or throttle body spacers.

Lots of things contribute to fuel consumption. The weight of the car, size and tread design of the tires, (some tires have less rolling friction), temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind, road condition, style of driving, ect. When you accelerate from any speed whether it be from stopped or in motion, the fuel required to move your car is directly related to how fast you want to reach a certain speed. Accelerating moderately to speed will save fuel. If you mash down the pedal hard and shift at 3k rpm ,you are using more fuel to reach that rpm than you would have used if you had eased into it. I see people all the time sitting at a stoplight . When the light goes green they zoom by me only to jam on the brakes at the next light. Wastes fuel! I don't drive like a granny , but I don't fly around in town. I blow the soot out after I get on a road that allows it. My car has 64000 mi. and I average 280 mi. from full to the fuel light. I have always used 93 octane with 4oz of mmo. Incidentally my car runs better now than when it was new and gets much better fuel economy. My 2cents worth. cheers

I really really don't get how you guys get anything over 19mpg on the highway even.
The highest I've gotten on a 600 mile interstate trip with this car is 17mpg. I live in the city and commute on the highway. My tank is typically 150 miles highway, 50 miles city. I do 200-210 miles till the light is on for a good 15 miles, that is it. That works out to some 13mpg.. Consistently.

I really just can't be the only one experiencing 25+ mpgs on the highway. I just checked my mileage on this most recent tank and averaged 19.8 with mostly city driving. I don't baby it by all means...

I have been getting these numbers with the Accessport. It's not the best gas mileage out there but it's great for an 8.

^ Wow I didn't think about that. Actually using the accessport to get better gas mileage. That would be a pretty good justification for the price by itself.... Hmm maybe I'll try that if I can find one on sale.

It's an '04, on it's 2nd motor...the first went out @ 36k and I have about 30k on this one. Only mods I have are listed in my sig. I will be doing some fuel system mods and some cooling mods but will not be able to list them exactly, as they are trade secrets of ROAR's.

As for keeping it under 3500 rpm, I didn't buy the car for that.

I hear ya on the shipping...good thing I'm only 3 hrs from the shop! As for your question about the AP, I am not using one as of yet...probably my Christmas present though.
And the tranny project has run into a snag...I think I may end up working with our tranny guy and crew chief and either mod an existing tranny we have or find a trashed one and rebuild that. I can't see myself spending 3k for Mazsports offering though.

I tried the Economy map on an AP....
Didn't even run one tank thru, before I took it off - it's horrible, gutless slow and nasty. Definitely took all the fun out!
So I guess I'll never find out how 'economy' it really is....oh well.

No that is impossible. Add 5 miles to your entire tank, yes. Add 5 miles per every mile you drive, no.
Once again to repeat my scientific rotary tests, I forced myself to drive with slow acceleration. Nice and easy, no redline, just slow as hell like a mid 90s Camry automatic. Got 47 miles for quarter tank, when usually I get 43 by driving like a demon. Do the math here.
4 miles extra per quarter tank means 12-15 miles extra over the course of the entire usable tank. With mpg at 14, I've just saved a gallon of gasoline before fill-up, and paid myself about $3.50. That is, paid myself $3.50 to drive just like a slow *** Camry from 1995.
Doesn't make sense. I'd have done much better than paying myself $3.50, by just buying with cash a cheap $500 car instead of financing rx8.
Once again, the cold hard math and rotary logic breaks down all these "dollar saving" measures.

I even played around with 87 octane a bit, but while it technically runs 'fine', I wasn't happy with it. The butt-o-meter felt a drop in power, and i swear it felt slightly rougher. More vibration etc... No CELs or anything, but instantly happier when I switched back to 93. The extra $2-$3 saved per tank is not worth it to go with 87 or carbon-caking your engine.
Or another way of putting it... I will -GLADLY- pay an extra $2-$3 per tank to have this much fun!
And I get an insane amount of pleasure knowing that my engine loves me for it too.

ok ok ok, so my 8 is my daily driver. I switched from a '94 Saturn SC2 which I was getting about 40 mpg highway. Yes 40!!! Now around town/city I get about 17 mph, and I drive to school 60 miles away on the highway. So i round trip about 120 miles per day. The 8 on that trip to and from school I average roughly 20-22 MPG. Thats not really saving much money. And thats at 80 MPG and hauling *** onto the highway from the onramps and after tolls. So I still get my fun out of the car as well. I've tried driving conservatively and seems I get WORSE gas mileage when I do. Seems I get best mileage at around 4k RPM

i get 25mpg on the highway if i use the economy mode with the AP.
generally i average around 19mpg, i blow away from stop signs, stop light gran prix and all. i do a lot of highway miles, usually in excess of 80mph, quite a bit in excess. and several WOT runs to the top of 4th and into 5th per tank. i think 19mpg is pretty damn decent for the way i drive.
