Fascinating, and thank you. But this is just manufaturer legal obfucaction to charachterize turning off multiple levels of DSC (IMO). I can state as experience, if the DSC is off and TCS is ON and the tires are slipping, the TCS applies the breaks every 2 sec or so to stop the slipping. Have seen it on my own car while someone else was driving. Turning off the TCS eliminates this. Performance-wise, on DRY roads, at speed, this occasional intervention has meant the difference for me between a tail-out slide and a clumbsy (though unintentional) power-on drift.

 

Um, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of turning it off? Push the button and you're on your own.

 

I'm going to have to agree with Glyphon after reading the manual more carefully. I always thought it was the other way but only because I read it here.

Lighting both lights is probably just a good way to distinguish a switch problem from another system problem.

I just keep mine on because I buy my own tires and usually if the *** of the car wants to point at on-coming traffic, it is not what I intended.

 

But why in the world would you design a switch that when held for 8 seconds did nothing except say the switch is broken?????

Something's not jiving quite right. Why wouldn't you just make a toggle on/off switch? The 8 second hold has to do something else.

 

no, holding it down longer doesn't have to do something else.

its just the way it was designed if something wasn't working correctly on the switch, and the designed method to communicate that the switch isn't functioning as expected.

 

If the switch is held in, the system thinks the switch has failed. Code C1093 (DSC OFF switch system) is logged. The fault is stored in the DSC hydraulic unit/control module that has a non-volatile memory that cannot be cleared by disconnecting the battery.

 

But why is my question. It's the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time. "The purpose of this switch is to toggle DSC/TCS on/off or if you hold it down for 8 seconds it tells the ecu that the switch (which you happen to be pushing) has failed."

Unless maybe it's there simply for warranty voiding accusations of abuse.

 

its likely a "fail condition" for if the switch gets stuck, it shorts and results in sending a "down" signal, spring breaks and doesn't return the switch to the "up" position...

 

Possibly, but why the slippery road light? Why not just throw a CEL? Failed traction control certainly warrants one.

It reminds me of the red "do not press" button from the Family Guy.

 

What do you mean why? It's plain. Someone comes in and says they have these squiggly lines always lit up on the dashboard. The dealer can't see the switch has failed by looking at it....he plugs in the WDS.

Bingo...it spits up a code that says "Hi there, change the freakin' switch"....!!

 

if you only press the button once the electronics can still come on and try to save your hide if it detects you are way out of shape. if you hold the button for more than 8 seconds the electronics WILL NOT come back on until you have turned the car off and turned it back on. even the quote from the manual states that DSC and TCS "may" not operate. it stores a code in case there is a reason the switch is stuck pressed other than operator intent.

A CEL is a Check Engine Light. The DSC has naff all to do with the engine. A DSC light actually has something to do with the DSC.

 

Seems simple enough to me and I write code that looks at switches. There was probably an FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis) and somebody in the meeting said "What if the switch stuck" and there was an "Action Item" and them some poor programmer had to add the stupid code to check to see if the switch is stuck. IMHO

 

CELS are primarily to do with things Emissions related as well. there are lots of things that could go wrong with an Engine that wouldnt throw a CEL.

 

Just wondering whether the DSC turns itself back on in extreme skidding condition like what's happening with a 350Z.

 

See... now I'm more confused, does this mean the DSC will reactivate when you are way out of shape after you do the single press???
