dry carbon hood.

Would anyone be interested in buying an AUTHENTIC veilside hood in dry carbon? Legitimate dry carbon thats been done in an AutoClav.

Pricing would be in the $1,500-$2,000 area and would weight roughly 3-5lbs.

This product is not available right now, but this is to test the RX8 population's interest in such an item.

Let me know please.

Hey VSBrian,

My observations around here are that people usually CRINGE at the sight of Varis' price tag of about $1200 for their hood.
I do not see people spending $1,500 to $2,000 on a hood.
I understand that this is dry carbon fiber and that the quality will be Top Notch but the average person will just see the price tag and go buy a Seibon.

Sorry.

100% understandable.
There are some people who want the carbon hood for the looks, which is fine.
There are some who want a REAL carbon hood for function.
There are some who don't care at all...

I'm just looking to see if there ARE those select owners who might want an incredibly light AND strong hood.

any constructive feedback is appreciated.

I prefer function over looks but not at that price tag, even at 3LBS, it only shaves what 10-12 pounds off the stock hood. Yes that is a great percentage but I installed a light weight battery for $100 and saved 15+lbs, that leaves a lot of money left over for other functional parts that would have a bigger net performance improvement then a carbon hood.

2-piece rotors on all 4 cornors for example saves about 14LBS of unsprung weight for about $1200 if my memory serves me correctly. So if I wanted to save weight and had $1500 to spend I would install 2-piece rotors on all four wheels and a light weight battery and have enough left over for some brake pads, plus i would have saved almost 30LBS.

this is for the people with money to blow on a show car or a dedicated track car. or with just too much money to spend.

i would be interested (disregarding the cash issue) but i'd be worried about a front end collision and the hood going straight into the car and cutting me in half. dry carbon is pretty strong. if it didnt shatter on impact there would be a good chance of this i think. any feedback on that?

I'll pass... the only way I see this being used is if you guys sponsor an RX-8 and slap this on there with a decal or 2

kersh - I have no idea to be honest. I've never seen any accident (street or track) with a dry carbon hood. I wouldn't really want anybody to find out either!
Probably the easiest way to see this is to find a racecar with a dry carbon hood that got in a wreck and see what the outcome was...

$1500 to $2000 for a CF hood is way too much even if its prepeg(dry carbon) and done in an autoclave, the only way I would pay anywhere close to $1500 is if the aforementioned hood is constructed with a Nomex honeycomb core sandwich in between the CF layers, but even then anything above $1500 is just ridiculous. Most people here understand that the lack of aftermarket parts for the Rx8 brings a premium for everything we want to do on our cars, however we are not ignorant like the aftermarket companies think we are, $2000 for a CF hood is just a slap in the face

The price definitly isn't aimed at a RX8 in specific.
The price of a standard Z33 hood from VeilSide is already at $1120 as a reference point.

the FRP RX8 hood is retailing at $680 and the carbon being $980.

I really do like the honeycomb nomex idea.

I can't speak for everybody, but I don't think any company assumes RX8 folks are ignorant. That just sounds ridiculous. IF it is true, they are damn fools.
