Driving down highway - lose all power.. Apex Seals Broke?

So - friday night I was driving down a highway here in Fort Worth, going at a speedy pace 85ish.... then suddenly i lose ALL power, tachometer drops to Zero, i see a flashing CEL before ALL The indicator lights come on in my dash, I was in medium traffic, luckily I had enough momentum to keep going to and find a nice shoulder to pull off in (this was at 11pm at night)

I stop and try to restart - I have electronics and power, the engine turns over, it just wont catch and fire. I know this is not a "flooding" issue since it happend when I was plenty warm and doing 80+ down the road. I did have the RPMs up there in the power band, but all I can think of is a blown Apex seal? I have a heavy gasoline smell coming from the rear of the car when I try to start.

Had to call 24/hour roadside assistance - they were out there with a flatbed in 45 minutes, and we dropped it off at the night drop of Mazda...

Won't know anything till monday but I am under my 50K warrenty (I also have 100K to back it up) The Hiley Mazda place was great they got me into a loaner for the weekend and till its fixed.... I do have some mods on my car but none that could have effected or caused this (Racing beat intake, exhaust, high flow cat, mazdaspeed suspension, clutch, flywheel)

Thoughts? Advice?

Thanks
Jeff

oh crap, you have a hi-flow cat, they might bone your *** for that, but apart from that........hmm, probably a blown seal or something, compression loss ftw?

Its Football season plus its hard to diagnose problems like yours via the net. I would show up at the dealership with a couple dozen doughnuts and coffee. Your mods can be an issue if your service writer is in a cranky mood.

Ok - you mentioned that the engine was going to be replaced. . . Does that = Apex Seal or something else/worse?

Inquiring minds want to know!

So, your going to sell it because you have a new engine?

well as soon as I can find a light duty truck I plan on selling my RX8... I have always had this plan, after a few months of the light duty truck as my full time driver im going to be getting into an 08 Z06 as a weekend car and keep the truck as a beater.

When i get ready to part the car out - it will most likely be over several weekends to take all the **** off the car (I'm lazy) heh

oh yes as an updated - the service guy said that they got my engine in... and for some reason put some different plugs in it and tried to start it up and it sounded liked a "weedeater"

He told me that the seals blew - and then as a general rant told me that most of the F'd up engines he gets and his problem with the Renesis in general is that people dont treat them like a rotary (redline once a day) we had a good discussion over the phone and he knew that I wasn't some flake trying to get a free engine for nothing.

To answer your question Razz1: My original plan was to sell my RX8 in about 5 to 6 months, use some of the money for a small truck, and the rest of the money to pay off a brand new Z06. I do love my RX8 but this whole engine blowing fiasco has made me want to go ahead and sell it earlier and move forward with the Z06 vette plan. This way it gives me plenty of time to put all my stock parts back on, sell them, collect the money, and then try to do a private sale on my RX8. If i get no bites then I will have no choice then to trade it in.

The RX8 is a nice weekend car.

The vette is not for everyone. They are still uncomfortamble and don't fit each body.

It's a great car. I hope it fits you well. We'll miss all that poison of yours.

Is heat from the physical location the major issue, (culprit), in all the engine issues?
