WTF!!
Are they not screwed in like other cars? Or do they use some type of adhesive. (if so, maybe just a bad application??)

They're stuck on with some crappy adhesive. One of mine is coming off too.

The aluminum stickon portion of my drivers-side door sill isn't down tight either. I've been contemplating gluing it down with crazy glue or double-sided 3M tape.

I wouldn't use crazy glue as is works best for small areas. I would make the dealer replace or fix it.

The pastic part is clipped down but the aluminum insert is glued. Same thing was happening on mine as well.

Your other option is to purchase the all aluminum sill plates. By the way, those stick down with double sided tape.

Mine came up on delivery when they removed the protective plastic. They actually closed the door and bent it. Replaced with a new one, no problem.

If you can get your hands on good quality servo tape (check a hobby store) that stuff stick like crazy and is a far superior adhesive than most glues of other forms of double sided tape.

A not so commonly used, but extremely effective adhesive is 3M's Clear UltraPro Autobody Sealant. Used mostly on body seams. It bonds well to painted metals, glass and aluminums..

Sticks better then sour milk tastes.

I had to throw in something about the milk metaphor , see it here

here's a link to the product

Mine are coming off as well- for now, I just step on them and they stick back on, but I think we're going to SuperGlue them. We noticed it at the dealers as well, and they just used some kind of white nasty glue- stuff to stick it back on and made a mess of it.

My Door Sill

My driver's side door sill kept popping up at the right side. I noticed this the day after delivery. I've had my RX8 for almost a month, and this is the only thing so far that I've noticed isn't right. I kept pushing it down to stick, and now that the cooler weather is here it seems to stick better. I would have thought the opposite.

Has anyone had the dealer fix this correctly (other than adding some kind of glue and making a mess of the appearance)?

welll im glad im not alone with the driver side door sill problem.. maybe Mazda should address this as a real problem compared to the 9 horses.. hey im more worries about loosing the door sills then the 9 horses!!

well my plan is ... next time it pops off im taking it to my room, as soon as i get a minute im running over to the dealer and making em fix it...

mazda wantagh has been great with "services" aka repairing **** that shud be fine.

they have had someone, Service, salesman, finanace associate, receptionist, take a peek at my car to see if they know what the prb is

The dealer should fix it, but for all,

I've found that 3M Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape, p/n 06384 (a.k.a. double sticky tape) is the best product for attaching mouldings, etc. I got it at NAPA, not cheap, about $7 for 1/2" x 5yd roll, but its the best! It held my RX7's side guard mouldings on for years, until I sold it.

double sided tape

Thanks, Charles. I'm inclined to believe this product is the better way to go than using glue.

FWIW, the door sill guards on most any car (Audi, Porsche, etc.) are usually attached with foam tape, the same stuff used to attach emblems to the car. This provides a (theoretically) permanent bond but yet the attached item can be removed and replaced if needed.

Do not glue the sills on; a cheap body shop once glued the emblems back onto one of my cars rather than spend the $5 to order a new one. When the dealer noticed the emblem was askew, they pulled it off in order to attach a new one under warranty and when the emblem came off it took a 3" diameter spot of the trunk paint with it...

I installed mine myself, and the instructions are quite clear that if you do not clean the area with white gasoline or equivalent, that you will not remove the wax, grease and oil that is present. If the surface is not cleaned properly prior to sticking on the adhesive tape, it will not stick for long. It must be adhered to the bare painted surface cleaned with a solvent that dries residue free. Mine are on as hard as a rock. I suspect that port installs or dealers cut a few corners on the directions. The tape can not be reused, as a minimum they will need to put new two sided tape on it and try again.

Are you guys talking about the standard sills or the accessory aluminum sills?

The aluminum sills are installed with double sided tape -- and yes the instructions clearly state that the sill must be cleaned with white gasoline first.

The standard sills use clips -- I would have to go and look at them but seems to me that there were at least 10 clips.

FWIW - I am not having any issues with my aluminum sills -- but I did clean the area thoroughly prior to install.

Because of this post I checked mine over the weekend. And sure enough both of them were not secure on the edges.

Mine are the ones that came on my GT. I also noticed that the dealer never took off the clear protective plastic from the sill plates.

Guess I will leave the plastic on for now.

If any sills come off, you must remove any remaining double sticky glue, etc. Mazda recommends using rubbing alcohol before installing mud flaps. A clean surface is a must!

How thick is this tape? Does it create a flush seal at the edges (so no dirt will get under) ?

3M 06384 Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape is 0.045" thick by 0.5" wide. After removing any crud from the original adhesive, I suggest trying to put the attachment tape in about the same place the adhesive was. My sills are OK, so far. Maybe someone who has experienced problems can give better advice on placement!

This is interesting.
Every other Mazda I have come in contact with (my MX-3 and Miata, the neighbor's 626 and Protege as well as the 3rd-gen RX-7 down the block and my friend's MPV) have the door sills attached with screws to counter-sunk plastic clips.
