Some of that just sounds like lack of experience... but keep in mind, that even the best drivers have 'situations'... chalk it up to a learning experience and be thankful it wasn't worse. You'll know better if it ever comes up again.

Yeah man, driving without DSC in the rain is always unpredictable. If the road is wet...you should always drive safe.

 

so if a learning experience kills someone that was just in the wrong place at the wrong time is that ok???

I love how people seem to think it's leet to have DSC off all the time. It's not like using Notepad instead of Frontpage to make webpages, if you do a real mistake here people can get killed.

Let's be realistic, in the rain it's very hard to say "I have full control over the car and the situation", at least on the oem tires.

 

I know what I'm doing pretty well, but I'd still rather have DSC than not have it. Sure I could recover from most slides unassisted, but there's no point in depriving myself of a potential safety net just because I know how to drive safely.

 

Do the "badasses" who must drive with traction control off also have to drive with ABS off too?

 

Just the other day, I was thinking "hmm, maybe I'll try driving with the DSC off to see what it's like".

Suddently, I'm a lot less interested in trying that experiment.

But yea people think they're better drivers if they keep dsc off or something. I turn it off when im autox, or burningout in a back road, or intentionally skidding, which i only do on empty roads without curbs far far from any cops, (gov't facilities work well on saturdays). the rest of the time, why risk the car? Skidding in traffic does NOT make you look cool, endangering children and endangered animals and whatnot, and if you do wreck your car, you look like a complete idiot. losing control is fun when its safe. its the same reason you dont get drunk with a bunch of vegas strippers without a gun. you're just asking to get robbed, and you end up with a damaged "suspension".

 

You'll only notice a difference if you catch the flashing squiggly lines on a regular basis. Otherwise, dynamics remain the same. Even with the DSC on, you can hang the back end out pretty far. Go to an autocross and disable it, that's about the only time it should make a difference.

 

Yup. The 8 gets twitchy on wet and icy roads.

Traction control should always remain on unless you're on a track. You don't disable your airbag because you don't plan to have an accident, why would you do differently for DSC?

 

I never turn DSC off unless its bone dry and the tires have warmed up (and I'm teh only one in the car). I'm still on OEM tires and they get slippery.

Just be glad you are alright and take the lesson to heart.

 

I would think people would know by now not to turn off the DSC.

Man, I get passed by old people if it's raining any more than a drizzle and I'm caught in the 8. My tires like to hydroplain. Even so, I'll probably buy another set when I kill these. They are mucho fun (NT-01s). I got caught at work in a surprise snow storm and when by the time I left at lunch, there was maybe 4" on the ground. I was fine until I got into my neighborhood driving the 6 mi. home in a slow crawl until I hit a patch of plowed out snow. The car slowly slid on the floor boards down the peak of the road and I put the right passenger wheel into to curb on the left side of the road. It was Austin Powers steamroller slow. Got a good notch in the lip out of it.

I don't generally intentionally try to slide the car. I'd rather cook around an on ramp with traction if I'm feeling frisky so the traction/stability controls are pretty much always on.

Attend a performance driving school and learn some humility in your ability to drive these machines.

 

mikesol, that is the reason I joined rx8club.com 4,388 post ago. I can sympathize with you 100%. Mine turned out to be a KO. Glad you are OK, that's the main thing. Now, go take some HPDE classes.

 

That's a function of the size and profile rather than the quality. Put in perspective, my Advan Neovas "only" cost me $275 each and they are generally considered one of if not the best tire available for our car. Would you pay $75 more per tire for that kind of performance if you already had good tires? Maybe, but you wouldn't be doing it because of value, which goes back to my point.

 

hpde is your friend, learn to control a spin before you start trying to spin the car
