Has anyone been able to fit a mountain bike into the trunk? And if anyone does any snowboarding have you guys been able to fit boards into the car? I have a roof rack but I was wondering if I always would need to use it.... it's a hassle.

 

I wouldn't count on it. Even if you took both wheels off, it would be a tight fit and much more of a hassle that popping it on the roof. I don't know about you, but my mtb gets very dirty after a good long ride, so putting it in the trunk would not be an option for me. But, you will never know until you try.

 

a single snowboard can fit. It takes some effort to get it in, and you have to stick it through the divider that goes from the trunk to the back seat. I dont think its possible to get a mountain bike back there though, not without disassembling most of your bike anyways.

 

if my bmx doesn't fit I'm pretty sure the mtb won't either, stick with the rack, it might be a hassle but it sure beats tearing up your interior

 

I was a little bummed recently that I couldn't fit a standard-size food & beverage cooler in the trunk. It was only about 1/2" too tall, I probably could have squeezed it through the rubber gasket but I didn't want to risk it. It actually fit pretty snugly in the back seat behind the passenger, especially with the passenger seat slid back and reclined a few inches -- no room at all for the cooler to even slide around! It's nice to be able to haul *** around town while also hauling stuff and not have to worry about it falling over or spilling.

You have to take a sawzall to it, but after that it fits fine!

 

You can fit it in only if you don't mind much of it hanging out the back. It won't be pretty, but with a couple blankets and bungee cords you can do it.

 

My snowboard won't fit because of the bindings. Short boards will fit across the back seat. How do I know? My Sienna broke down 12miles from home with me, 3 kids, and 4 snowboards on Jan2. It took numerous trips to get everyone home. Thank God it didn't happen at the top of Big Bear. To add insult to injury, didn't even go snowboarding that day because the conditions sucked!

I can get my MTB in there (hardtail, 23" top tube) if I pull off the wheels and the seat. If you mark your seat level its not such a pain. My road and cyclocross bikes (55-56cm) are a tighter squeeze but I can get them in there too. I'd personally rather do this than to deal with the further hit to gas mileage and noise a roof rack makes. Also, on my old car I forgot about the bikes and doored them against the garage once.

I am checking into the Saris Bones trunk mount rack as well. If you do some searches..most people have had good experiences but a few have had bumper scratches and dents. I get the feeling that if you use it properly it is the best option.

Most mountain bikes are going to need some serious dismantling before they'll fit. I've seen guys even take their headsets off to make them fit!

 

Yeah I was rather dissappointed too when my cooler wouldn't fit in the trunk! But then I realized that on long road trips (even short trips for that matter) the trunk gets mad hot! I packed a watermellon in the trunk on a 400 mile trip and the thing rotted/cooked, anyway we didn't eat it - too funky smelling.

So I'll be keeping my bike on the roof and my mellons in the back seat.

BTW What is up with all the heat in this ride?!

I can barely fit a full laundry basket in the trunk!

But I sold my bike before I got my car, and am now shopping for a new one. So I guess I'm also going to have to contend with the whole bike rack thing. It's a pain.

I have the spare tire. That blocks the pass through, so that is out. It also shrinks the trunk space quite a bit. It's a tight fit for a lot of things, especially if my mom is with me and wants to go grocery shopping. For some reason she feels the need to buy most of the store and then totally fill up the trunk AND the back seat!!!

I can't see a how a bike would fit in there too easily seeing as I have a large hassle when I need to put my sewing machine in the trunk, which is consideraly smaller than a bike.

 

Okay, I almost got caught in a serious incongruity loop here... a modern woman who 1) appreciates the technological sophistication of the RX-8, and 2) actually knows how to use a sewing machine? Talk about mixing the old and the new in creative ways.

 

I sew clothing and other items by machine as well as machine embroidery. I also do heirloom sewing/embroidery by hand such as smocking. I really enjoy it.

Trunk bashing is fun but my wife and I joked that we could never "do it" in the back seat when we first saw the car at the Autoshow. I'd imagine the combination of the center beam and the individual bucket seats would hinder manly performance...

Today I experienced the true nature of the RX-8. This morning I took part in an SCCA Autocross. On the way home I stopped off at Home Depot and picked up a lawn mower. Moving the helmet and various race things out of the way, I shoved the big box into the back seat. MAN I got some looks from people standing nearby. And they made fun of our "backwards" rear doors...

Just try doing THAT with a Boxster. HA!
