DIY Videos?

I propose that some people make some detailed DIY videos on replacing spark plugs, ignition coils, cleaning MAF sensors, and several other important stuff. I'm a total car newb and reading all of this is like reading hieroglyphics. I don't want to ruin my car so i need to see someone do it firsthand!!

And how much would you be willing to pay to have someone spend that kind of time to set up?

Not being a dick, but that is hours and hours of work.

The actual processes i heard range from 5-30 minutes max. Maybe editing the videos will take hours of work..

Yep, and jacking the car up - and actually removing the parts etc.

Then getting someone else to run the video to get the proper angles. To do all routine maint; and edit them it would take 2 people a full day minimum.

I think it is a good idea. I just think it is asking for a lot of work.

this is a lot to ask. But, not outrageous
Hell, if I ever get around to working on my car while she's stored, maybe I'll make a couple vids!

Most of the DIY threads have very detailed pictures and also explain what you need to do very well. I recently read the spark plug change thread and the pictures in there is all you need. If your not understanding what to do based off the pictures and explanation maybe you should not be changing your own plugs?

Cleaning the MAF is super easy, its just removing 2 screws and pulling it out and spraying it with MAF cleaner. Everything in the DIY section always makes more sense once you get under the car or in the general area and can see it for yourself.

Another option would be looking at the regional forums and posting in your states/citys thread to see if anyone around is going to be working on their cars soon. Ask if you can come over and help out so you can learn what to do first hand. While your there bring your own camera and make those DIY videos for other people. :P

^ Good plan.

I totally think it is worthwhile to do - but much like begging for anything, you are on the schedule of the "helper". So if there were an all hands call for videos, eventually they would drift in.... it may take years.

Consequently, if someone were to do a DVD for say $20-30 bucks; and had 10 people willing to buy, then it would probably be done in a week or two.

* Disclosure - I am not that guy, I am not even home to do it if I wanted to - just saying I bet someone would do it.

Yea if people are willing to pay then that always makes thing happen faster. Most people wouldn't pay though because the DIY section exists and is good enough for the most part. Even if there's something specific you don't understand you can just post and get a response pretty fast.

I think his best bet is finding someone local. I know in vegas Phils 8 is always inviting people over to help install stuff or get their own cars worked on. I'm sure there's nice people like that all over this forum.

thanks guys. Yeah i've tried checking google. the 2 things i want to learn right now is spark plugs, ignition coils. maf sensor seems really simple. two screws out, use a knife to lift it from it's port. spray the crap out of it and let it dry reinsiert and screw back in.

spark plugs and ignition coils im not too sure about and i don't want to risk ruining anything which is why i'd feel much more comfortable/safer watching a video to see how it is done piece by piece before attempting something by reading a detailed instructional guide

It's a lot of work if you don't already have to do the job.... it wouldn't be that much more difficult to video during the process. Angles might be difficult, but as long as you can get a decent view of what you're going to be tightening/loosing, then it would be pretty straight forward. Plus, you could skip the painfully obvious steps such as jacking the car up and removal of the tire. Simply show the positioning of the jack (for those that dont know the spot) and say that you've removed the wheel. If they can't figure that stuff out, they can't do the job themselves anyways.

If I still had the 8, I wouldn't mind doing a video one day if it was a job that needed to be done. I wouldn't go replace perfectly fine plugs/coils just to make the video though.

These jobs are fairly straight forward. The 8 was the first car I worked on myself and the plugs had to be one of the easiest things I did. Once you know where they are, the toughest thing is to make sure you keep track of leading and trailing.
