Can I compare it to my 91 coupe? If so, it's behind. Same trip in my 91 netted 25 mpg, almost 99% interstate, the 8 did it in 23. Not that big of a difference other than this car WAS supposed to be better in gas mileage compared to the NA 2nd gens. Am I bitching now, no, it's my wife's daily driver and she loves it no matter if I do kid around with her about it. On the plus side, damn it's so much of a nicer car in every aspect compared to my 91, the 2 mpg difference is a moot point.

93 RX-7 - my toy
91 RX-7 coupe - my dailer driver

Thats about right. No question about it, the 928 had much more power. It also beat the EPA mileage pretty well - I often got 23-24 MPG on trips and usually about 18 MPG in mixed driving. But despite the gas mileage the 9128 is best summed up as the most expensive collection of parts in the world. When something broke and unlike a Porsche many things did, it cost a fortune. I did a timing belt at 60,000 miles - it took me 2 weekends - flat rate labor is 20 hours, I spent about 25-30.

But driving the 928 was pure heaven. The best road car I've EVER driven - until I drove the RX8. The RX8 is a little louder (road noise) and a little quieter (no V8 growl). Handling it's as better balanced then the 928 and has a noticabley lower polar moment. Brakes are MUCH better. Steering and the progressive power assist is refined compared to the Porsche. Shifting is crisp and precise but lacks the bulky-gear feeling of the Porsche. And I doubt I'll need new 1-2-3 synchos every 50,000 miles for the gearbox to feel good.

So if I only get 18 MPG aroud town and 22 on the highway I'm still very pleased. I really don't miss the extra 100 HP. Nor do I miss spending about $4000 a year on parts to keep me busy about 10 hours a week.

1st: he was comparing MPG to HP, not displacement
2nd: its an auto engine vs. an auto engine, piston engines are the market compitition so comparing them is perfectly logical.
3rd: why change the part yourself when you have a warranty?

Maybe we should all just get Chevy Aveos then... That would just fix all of our problems.

The bottom line as far as I'm concerned is that the 8 is one of the few exciting cars on the road today. Most are SUVs, minivans, family sedans, and sporty wannabes. And, of the interesting cars, the 8 is as or more reasonably priced than any out there.

If you want, spend more to buy "mere transportation." I'd rather buy fun, excitement, and style.

all you have to do is look at the Consumer Reports reliability ratings, and then compare with the multitude of threads from people on this board getting "TSB's done" when there is nothing wrong with the car just because they wanted to get something for free or because everyone else is.

I have never seen another forum like this where there is so much talk of "if I say xxx is wrong with the car, Mazda will give me XXX and XXX and XXX for free".

sorry, but this forum has absolutely done a lot of harm - and long term reliability is a biggie for resale value in the future

Car and Driver's latest has an update on a Subaru Legacy GT, its long term tester and a car I was considering for my wife. Among other items, it needed a new clutch, flywheel, both rear wheel bearings, and fuel injectors. And I thought my VW Passat was bad!

So far, my only 8 problem was brake squeal, otherwise its as reliable as my old Miata.

I've only had minor problems with my 8, like I posted before, one bad sensor, a faulty 5th gear synchro and a faulty battery (died three days after getting the car) - That is no worse than my other vehicles at 40Kmiles. I'd still consider getting another 8 if I needed a new car but I'm concerned about the technicians. A good tech makes a world of difference. For each of my problems, I had to make multiple trips back to the dealership. The trips back and forth are what concerns me. If I have a problem, fix it - don't have me keep coming back over and over for the same thing or items related to the repair. Time is money and spending an average of 2.5 hours each visit (trip included) is ridiculous.

Mazda needs better tech's with proper training to bolster brand loyalty. I have 10K left on my warranty, I'm actually looking forward to being able to take my car elsewhere for service. I know I can take it other places now, but have concerns about my warranty being voided for a bs reason - it would be difficult (not impossible) for Mazda to void a warranty if all service is done by Mazda's techs.

Cheers,

Alex

YOU ARE A DUMB ***!

Why do people complain.......come on you can do it..........that's it, because there are problems. Instead of chastising the people who point out problems with the car maybe you should direct you wrath at Mazda to fix the problems.

The "whining" on this list helps set an expectation for the car by pointing out the problems or short comings one will have. This list has help me set my expectation before I bought and solve may issue that I would have never been aware of until they cost me a lot of money down the line.

The only time you'll get really negative complaining is when expectations are not meet. The only grips I have with this car are MPG and Mazda's service approach. Neither of these meet my expectation set by this forum so I complain to set others expectations.

The fact that I still own this car indicates that the outstanding benefits still out way the lows.

Also Mazda seems to be listening at times because many of the posted problems here are later addressed by Mazda at the factory. ie Engine breather system, AC condenser screen, etc.... The only problem is the choose not to correct these problems in the existing cars.

There is a lot to learn from criticism assuming you have the intelligence to listen.

It was by way of CONTRAST, a legitimate use of the word! However, point taken.

(BTW, have you ever noticed how similar the 8's silver add-on strakes look to the Crossfire's built-in strakes?)

Agreed on Mazda listening, but what car companies do end up fixing every flaw of earlier models under warranty? I'd be in dealership heaven if they could do what you mentioned. I'm more than happy with my '04 though.

Agreed, they can't fix every thing but major items that are design flaws should be fixed or at least warrantied for an extended period.
