Does anyone know if there is an actual or meaningful difference in the exhaust pipe that goes between the mid-pipe (cat) and the muffler on the S1 and S2? It uses a slip-on connection to the muffler.

There are aftermarket replacements available for the S1 that are less expensive than OEM, but there are no listings for an aftermarket part for the S2.

Was wondering if they are essentially the same part with a different number from Mazda.

 

Hangers are different. You need an S2 exhaust. They are out there. My R3 has an exoticspeed catback

 

Maybe it wasn’t clear in my other reply, but it was never intended to be separated and likely will never seal again. They very specifically state not to mess with it in the service manual. I saw my old post from a long time ago and the S1 pipe OD there is 60mm. I used a bunch of those by cutting the pipe before the clamp and adapting lightweight race exhausts on them in place of the muffler end. What I told you in the other thread and now here is from experience. The catback flange and pipe are actually quite light.

Even if you do manage to get the old one off and the new one on then you should plan on welding it in place or else it will likely leak there for sure.

Not sure about pre muffler. Tho I am pretty sure the tips were enlarged from 2" to 2.5"

 

The S1 Mazdaspeed catback I have was used on an S2 by the previous owner. AFAIK he had fab his own hangers (the rubber parts, not the metal), because the S2 tips sit lower, but otherwise it all fit.
