Did my 8 get vandalized?

So I went out to the driveway Sunday morning to look at the car and what do I see??

It's about 15 inches long right in front of where I look out of the windshield. Here you can see the little point of impact...looks pretty small I'm guessing a rock or something.

Do you guys suspect foul play? I didn't park under any trees and there was no debris lying around the car in the morning of something that could have fallen off the roof. I'm pretty pissed because this is $500 that was going towards the MS kit

If its an old windshield the change in temperature overnight could have cracked it (highly unlikely but possible)

Edit: You said there were not any trees but i can see them in the reflection hahaha

Glass is usually covered under comprehensive insurance and in many places will not cost you anything to replace.

Glass is kind of funny. it won't necessarily crack or shatter the moment of impact. Something probably hit the glass in the morning, and the crack formed overnight.

However it happened, it's not vandalism.

Yes it is a delayed impact crack. You found the impact.

Yeah, there are kids who do naughty things in the culdesac above my house so maybe they wimped out midway. I doubt it though I've given up on the vandal thought by now.

I once watched a crack grow all across the windshield of a Ford Ranger pickup I used to own, during a commute home one day. It grew from a tiny impact crater perhaps 1/16" across, down by the wiper blade. Took about five minutes to cross the whole windshield.

It was mesmerizing. And you should have heard me cuss all the way home!

I've seen these sort of hairline fracture on windshield alot here. Folks who park their cars outside during winter overnight, then get into the car in the cold morning, fire up the car and blast the defroster against it. Crrraacccck!
Tiny stone chips if not fixed will cause that too due to moisture gathering. With freezing and thawing in the cold climate, the moisture transforms from tiny water particle to frozen stone strong enough to crack the windshield. This is also how you get potholes on the ground during winter climates. Hey, guess I didn't sleep through all of my physics class after all.

I've been installing autoglass for 15 years now. All it takes is a pit mark the size of the point on an ink pen, may look like a spec of dirt. Normally if you have the defroster on and it defrosts' the window gradually, it is a lessens the chance of cracking. Also, do get rock chips fixed asap, as once it rains, the wipers work like a squeege and force dirt into the chip. This makes it more difficult to get it clear and hold with any longevity. I just replaced the windshield on the 8 not long ago. The rock hit and split within 3 minutes.................. It was a rather inexpensive repair.

Besides, if someone wanted to vandalize your car they would "key" it—not damage the windshield. (Unless they're totally new to vandalism and just learning it, or really, really stupid.)

Glass is a strange material. It really does look like a pre-existing impact mixed with extreme temperature changes caused a crack. It happens. And yeah, if someone had the ***** to crack your windshield, they'd probably full on smash it instead of just a 'small' crack. That'd be like someone keying your car only 4 inches. If you have to ask, it probably wasn't vandalism.
