Diagnostic Mode ?

Can some one try the instructions on this site www.mustangworld.com to see if it works with the RX-8 ?

According to the posts on this forum www.mazda6club.com it works on the Mazda 6.

Yes and No

Yes, you can get it into Test mode by holding the trip reset down while turning on the ignition.

No, the tests are not the same as those listed on the Mustangworld site. Until someone manages to find and post the actual test descriptions from a service manual, it's merely an entertaining novelty.

BTW, pressing and holding the reset button to enable this mode will clear whichever trip is currently displayed. If you're using Trip A for your gas mileage, you'll probably want to turn on the ignition, press the button to select Trip B, then turn it off again before pressing and holding while you turn on once more.

These Are the codes that some one posted on the Mazda 6 forum - I wonder if these apply to the RX-8 aswell?

Now that we have our 6, I've been able to figure out some of the additional functions in the test mode. I've listed them below. The tests are done sequentially by pressing the reset button. It does not cycle through again. The trip meter is NOT reset if you do it right (hold in button B4 turning key to run position and hold until tEst shows up).

Test Number / Code Displayed / Function

01 / on / unknown
04 / on|off / drivers door open|door closed
08 / on|off / light sw on|light sw off
12 / oo / speedometer check
13 / oo / tachometer check
14 / oo / beeper check
16 / on (blinks 3 times) / low fuel light chk
18 / on (blinks 3 times) / unknown
22 /053 / unknown
23 /oo / fuel gauge chk
25 /oo / water temp gauge chk
all warning light check
50 / -- / unknown
51 / -- / "
31 /on|off / key in/out check *

*when ignition is turned off, you'll see "31/on" (turn parking lights on to see display); removing key will show "31/off"

Those sound pretty close to what I observed at lunchtime. There are obviously some that are unique to the 6 and the RX-8. But even though I did do the button/key sequence "correctly," it still cleared the trip meter that was currently displayed.

Yeah, ditto eccles remark about the meter reset. Also, did you notic the sweep range of the oil pressure guage? It maxes out at about the same point as where the needle normally sits at idle. What's up with that, I wonder...

I also noticed on the one that displays 23x in the odometer, the numbers change if you adjust the aircon fan speed. Didn't play with other electrical accessories though - possible it is some kind of voltage or current reading.

This has come up before...the oil pressure "gauge" isn't really a gauge. It's an idiot light made to look like a gauge. It's either low (bad) or at just above center (good).

I'm gonna have to try this out... is it safe to drive around in the diagnostic mode???

slightly related subject - is there an OBDII port located somewhere inside the cabin? I have a friend with a OBDII datalogger that I want to check out when my break-in period is over to make sure the throttle is opening 100% as well as other things like fuel miliage and such.

Updated info

While I was at the dealership the other day, I saw a section of the RX-8 service manual which detailed the instrument cluster tests. Here are the codes and what they mean:

Code:
Code Display Meaning

 01 on Driver's seatbelt unbuckled
        oFF Driver's seatbelt buckled
 04 on Driver's door open
        oFF Driver's door closed
08 on Headlight switch is on
        oFF Headlight switch is off
12 oo Lights all segments of speedo
13 oo Tacho check. Moves to full scale then back to approx 3000rpm
 14 on Sounds warning buzzer
16 (on) Display and fuel warning light blink three times
18 (on) Display and ignition key illumination blink three times
22 NNN Fuel level signal. Displays current resistance of tank sender (ohms)
 23     oo      Fuel gauge moves to F -> 1/2 -> E -> F
 25     oo      Temperature gauge moves to H -> Center -> C -> H
26 888 Lights all odo/trip segments and warning lights
28 oo Oil pressure gauge moves to normal position (slightly over center scale)
31 on Key is in ignition
oFF Key is not in ignition (turn lights on to read the display for this one)
55 on Dash dimmer switch is in daylight position (past the click)
oFF Dash dimmer switch is in normal dimmer position
Happy tinkering.
