Thanks for the info on that. I thought it was 14 because I would fill it up ,when the light came on, with 13.1 gallons or something and for some reason I just assumed. Gives me more confidence now, because one gallon goes pretty fast in this car.

I wouldn't go to 0 30w in Tx.

You need aheavier oil due to the heat.

I've run 20-50 before at the track.

When the first fuel-injected passenger cars started to become common decades ago, we were warned to never let the gas run completely out. Somehow it was supposed to screw up the injectors. I can't honestly remember the technical reasons for the warning, but the habit has stuck with me. I usually fill at 1/2 tank unless circumstances prevent it. Can't recall ever having taken a tank right down to the reserve.

nahhh i stopped using tomato juice as a premix... sorta lost some performance but now i use v8 splash! hahaa nothing better then a V8!! hahahah

so ya, something similar happened today.

long *** drive to campsite (1 hour) gas @ 1/2 tank, 93 gas, 4 oz premix idemitsu, then there was a part where i have to floor it and get up to speed. then i noticed that when i hit 7000 rpmish my engine dies, but i'll just shift to next gear and let the rpm drop, it will keep going fine.

then after i got home (Empty gas light on) i started to loose power at 3000,4000 rpm depending on if it was a hill/straigh, so i use the lower gear with clutch feathering while revving the engine at about 400 rpm to get home (mazda dealership close today)

i got to a gas station near home, went in, put in 2 gallons of gas(no premix this time, about 5 min of cooling down time for engine) and then on the way home (1mile) i was redlining it all the way... i manage to get to redline and stuff with regular power and no powerloss... wtf is going on, i am planning on taking it in tommorow morning and take the morning off.

sounds like a fuel starvation problem again.

The classic symptom of running out of gas if you never have is to have the car bog down when you're trying to gas it, but it'll idle fine. However once that starts happening you have about 30 seconds worth of gas. your problem seems a bit different, but still related.

Jethro: I believe the reason for that warning was because diesel engines from the same time had problems if you ran out of fuel, you'd get air into the fuel lines and then you had to purge the whole fuel system to get it going again. Most if not all modern diesel engines no longer have this problem, I know this particular fact from firsthand experience as well.

so wats the 1st symptom at 1/2 tank with not able to go past 7k rpm? that can't be fuel starvation.

the fuel needle was also still 1.5 notch from the bottom when the 2nd set of symptom was discovered.

coils or fuel pump starting to go... both are not expensive diy projects.

47k miles, 04. no cel thus far, but the loss at 7k was triggering the engine light flashing.

the low gas tank one did not have engine light flashing.

man.. i hope its not the fuel pump.. then i'd be running lean up top or something @.@

replace coils. that is the most likely culprit. when was the last time the plugs were changed?

not too sure, the previous owner "claims" he has done the 30k maintenance, and tats all i know.

the plugs are a 30k mile item or so mazda says.. few do well at 25k miles.. most find it better to replace at 20k miles.. (this is the part where drive the car hard is better.)

i would replace them first. also i really would go ahead and do the coils also..

all very easy to do with simple hand tools. great diy stuff covered in the diy section..

depends on where you are headed, and how much disposable income you have...

if you are planing to go fi.. well the mazsport solution is getting ahead of the game.

if you are staying na.. well i would change the plugs first and see if that fixes the problem.. ya know that is what you should do either way..

You may have a dirty fuel filter. I had the same problem on 2 my RX-7's.

This is interesting to me. Just had the 30K service done. Service writer said that plugs are a 35K change, and I looked it up on the mazdausa site to see the online manual and it says the same. I've had no problems with power loss...but I very rarely let her get below 1/4 tank, and I drive her pretty hard. AM I just lucky?
