Ok so im a busy guy and I don't really even have time to do my plugs unless it really isn't worth it to let the dealer do it. Bob Penkhus Mazda told me that they would do the four plugs installed for $230. Is this a terrible deal? I realize it'd be like $100 for all four plugs online...but time is money for me. I guess it's stupid of me to make this thread asking, but I'm just wondering. Also, the lady there who did a bunch of free warranty repairs for me (I didnt buy the car thru them) said I'd only need to replace the plugs and that the wires shouldn't need replaced for a good while. She also said the ignition coils don't need replaced since the vehicle starts perfectly.

How many miles are on the car? How's your idle?
$230 doesn't seem bad from a dealer, but to me is still a steep price to pay.

yes, that is a terrible deal on the spark plug change. You can change spark plugs in less than 30 minutes. That is actually kind of insulting that they quoted you so high. I would go into the regional forum and ask if a fellow member would be willing to help you out, it will save you a bit.

As for ignition coils, how many miles are on your car? It's recommend to change them around 30k miles, though some have lasted much longer and some died much sooner. 30 is just the average barometer for this kind of thing.

The idle has always been pretty damn good. A lil bit shakey occasionally but never annoying or something I even noticed.

I bought the car used at 23k miles. I have 45.5k right now. All I've done so far is regular 3k oil changes with 10w30 synthetic once it got hot. I got the car in march and have put a lot of miles on it so far. It was cold in march and I ran 5w20 for the first oil change or two and then switched to the 10w30.

Anyways I have no idea when the coils / plugs have been replaced if ever but not since I've owned it. Should I go ahead and replace them? Are the ignition coils easy too?

Also. I haven't done anything with the transmission yet. I have checked my fluid like 4 times and every time it's been nice and clear with a hint of pink and it has been full. The transmission shifts smoothly. Is there any reason to have it flushed right now? It hasn't been flushed since I've owned it.

replace tranny fluid for good measure.

replacing ignition coils is actually easier than replacing spark plugs. A 8 year old could do it, and I'm not poking fun I'm being serious.

lol but seriously if my car doesn't start fast that's a warranty issue? i convinced this bitch last time to give me free warranty stuff. They did kinda do a lot. But it mostly was like some rattling molding pieces they replaced fo' free.

Swoope is right, that is warranty work. Don't feel bad about bringing you car in for anything warranty related no matter how much stuff you need fixed. Take full advantage now while you still have said warranty

lol awesome. No offense taken... I know im not a mechanic. But I am mechanically savvy. More of a geek though. Okay so with the plugs as long as I reach them, get the old ones unscrewed, put anti seize **** on the new ones, and then just tighten them up I'm set?? How about the ignition coils? Am I retarded for asking this? lol Im too lazy to search. Ive lurched too much lol.

Ignition coils are direct plug and play. Just order new coils from www.finishlineperformance.com, do each one individually and be done with it with extra money in your wallet. You literally just need to unplug the top part of the wire on each, remove the coil, replace with new coil, then plug back in the wire. If you do them one by one you also won't screw up which plug goes to leading and trailing, as this is important

Ok so let me get this straight there are 2 or 4 ignition coils on my 4 port? I understand spark plugs, cuz i did them on my mazda6 once, but ive never done coils.

Spark plugs are a difficult issue to the un-initiated.

The RX-8 plugs are platinum tipped allowing them to last longer than regular plugs. However, dont believe a dealership & let them go for 50,000km

Typical rule of thumb for a rotary is. When fuel consumption starts to soar for no real reason, the plugs are one of the first items to look at.

Coil issue is a well known one. here is a handy link to read about DIY fix.

that sounds typical for a dealership.

but think of it, you have to drive there, drop the car off, and come back later. that process probably gonna take you 1 hour of time.

So is it really worth it to do so? You gotta think deep.

well i want to get my wheels completed fixed and recoated and this guy quoted me $300 for all 4 which includes some straightening as well (heating up the wheel). So ill probably just do the plugs and coils myself.
