Dealer Offered Free Tail Lights
Hey guys I actually went in for an oil change and my rear passenger side tail light fogged up the night before from a car wash. So I didn’t think much of it, but when I got to Mazda they said they could fix it. So I said fine. Then he said they don’t have the item to fix it, so their just going to order new tail lights for free. Now my question is, can I keep my old lights? I know their going to want to keep them, but I mean it is my car. Or is it an exchange kind of deal? Because that would make sense also. Well I just wanted to know what you all thought about it. Thanks!

I would bet that the dealer is going to see them as an exchange. I would assume that they need some sort of proof that they actually replaced yours, in order to get reimbursed from MNAO for the work done and the parts.
Did they say why your tail light was fogging up, was it cracked, or just defective?

They actually just said some 8 models tend to fog up easier than others. I didn’t really care because I know it would eventually go away. But it does make sense for them to keep them in exchange. I assumed they would anyways.

This happens very commonly in newer cars. I think if you take the housing out, remove the bulbs, leave it in an air conditioned room for a few hours and then reassemble it INSIDE, then the moisture content inside should lower to the point where it won't do it anymore.

mine were replaced 2 times.
the problem (fogging) is in a service bulliten.
I was told Mazda had to replace them!
Doubt , they will let you keep the old ones, as Mazda will repair them and re-use or resale them

They wont let you keep them because on warranty replacement parts Mazda dealers must keep them for 45 days after replacement incase mazda calls for them. If we dont have to send them back then we just throw them away. If you ask the parts dept nicely they may set them aside and when the 45 day period is up they might just give them to you, i know i would.

My left tail light had been fogging for a few months and finally shorted out, the whole thing went. I had it replaced a month ago when performing the recall. Now the right one is also fogging, and the new left one is out again. Bugger.
Taking it in today so they can verify it before ordering the parts. Gotta love how trusting my service dept is.
