Considering a purchase... some help please

So I stopped by a dealer who had a 2004 RX-8, black in color, and an unfortunate automatic transmission, with only 28k miles. Pretty much a base RX-8. I own a Hyundai Tiburon, 2004 which the dealer will only give 8k for, and I owe 13k. They had a price tag on the window of 17450. I have been talking with them and they have worked down the numbers pretty low. They can get the car to 20300 with my negative equity. That's theoretically paying about 15-16k for a used RX-8 with me being upside down and them eating that debt.

I'm getting out of some horrible Hyundai depreciation this way, but I'm a little worried about owning an automatic transmission. Can anyone give me some advice on the automatic transmission and whether or not this is a smart purchase? It seems like a really good deal. I am a little disappointed that this great deal is on an auto.

Any information is highly appreciated!!

DO NOT GET THE AUTO!!!!!!!!!!!

And even at $16k, they are overcharging you

Sell your car yourself and get more for it. As a trade in they will under bid you by about $3000.

And a BRAND NEW sport model can be had for $21,500, so why would you pay that much for a 4 year old auto?

let's clarify - 2004 AT is 4 port vs. the 6 port of later years. i would keep looking, especially if you don't need to get an AT. there are plenty of good deals out there if you just put forth the slightest bit of effort.

I paid around that, for my 07 Touring w/ MT with discounts and rebates. With current incentives...buy new. 3K off with 1.9% financing...that takes a base AT down to 23K new at MSRP...and nobody pays that anymore.

I was offered either $2K rebate OR 1.9% financing from Mazda. Both equaled out to about the same monthly payment with my average credit score. I paid invoice for an 08 6MT Sport model $24,995.

Good Luck OP!

That is not a good deal. If you stand your ground you can do much better on a car that you want more. I recently bought a pristine '06 MT with the performance package and less than 10k miles for $17,525. A couple of people got new '07s MTs without the performance package for $17,5 and $18 with dealer financing. It's a buyer's market, wait and look for exactly what you want and pay what you want to pay.

Well I appreciate all the help, looks like a fairly unanimous decision. I'm going to just try to sell my car privately, it's just depreciating so fast I'm trying to get rid of it now. I hope to soon be an owner of an rx-8. Thanks for all the help!

Do you really hate the Tiburon? Financially you're probably better off just driving the wheels off it than trying to get out now, but it's tough to drive a car you don't like for another 4 or 5 years.

I kinda agree with Map. But hey, if you want an RX-8 so bad, I definitely won't stop you from jumping into a better car

Figure I would post in this thread seeing has the title is what I was going to ask. I as well am looking towards buying a rx8 and kicking the high horsepower Chevy to the side (gas prices are not friendly). I don't know much about imports, first one for me. But I do like the fact that its a different engine and the look. I would like to know are there different versions I should look for and what I should look for when buying a used one?

If gas prices are what you're worried about, the 8 won't be a good choice for you. It drinks gas like none other, but it's so worth it!

I recently bought a 05 RX8 AT, 2 months later my car was getting some subs installed so a friend and myself went wandering down to the Mazda dealership to look around. Found a decent deal for a 05 RX8 Shinka (M/T) and jumped on it. Took a bit of a financial hit but I couldn't ever see myself buying another AT RX8. The MT is so much more fun to drive, I loved the AT to death, but the difference is amazing.

Nah, I definitely don't hate it. It's a beautiful car. And unfortunately I also have the 4-cylinder, the upside is good gas mileage, and easier to work on. But I've really been thinking about it, and the wiser thing to do is to just pay it off and drive it. It's a good car! Thanks again.

1. Do not settle for an AT rx8...I love auto transmissions but this is not the car to get one in.

2. That price is ridiculously high. I'd be looking for an rx8 in the for sale section here.
