which color is better?

i am looking at 2 cars a sunlight silver without the rotary pkg or the navigation and lists for $32. the other car is black but has everything and lists for $36 now i am sure i can talk them down on the prices however which one will be harder to maintain the apearance of it? i heard that black shows all the small scratches and swirls very noticably yet the silver wouldnt. Another option would be to have the dealer locate a car that has everything and is silver. I just am not sure if that would increase my buying price or not.

any comments will be appreciated.

I'll take 100 of those black ones at $36 and 50 of the silver ones for $32 :p

On a serious note they are both nice cars and you should get what YOU like and not what everyone else thinks is nice.

idle0ne 01-05-2004 03:37 PM

i was not actuually looking for comments just based on color preference but is what i heard about the black so much harder to maintain and keep looking good true?

when it comes down to it i am going to zaino either car... how much will this help the apearance?

The black will show swirls and dirt more over the life of the paint. Black paint has more pigment so it is softer, and the color has a high contrast against the primer color so chips will show up a little more.

I would take the black one. I love the Navigation in my RX-8, plus the rotary Accent and appearance package look outstanding. I think those two options make the car as far as looks are concerned.

Keep in mind though, the accents and the appearance can both be added by the dealer, while navigation cannot.

I would recommend going with the fully loaded one... sounds a lot like my black (MSRP around $35,700) and it really turns a lot of heads. I personally was torn between Silver, Tit Gray, and black... until I saw my black 8 sitting in the lot with the appearance package, rotary accents and spoiler... really sharp. And it had the two tone leather interior that I was having trouble finding in this area. As someone mentioned, you can't add the NAV system after the fact, if that's something you really want (I love mine).

Here are some pics of mine if it helps...

I have the black and Zaino has worked wonders for me. I live in Wisconsin, so the car gets covered in snow and salt, but it always cleans up really nice. If you put in the effort, the black can look great.

idle0ne 01-05-2004 05:27 PM

so black will only look bad if i dont take care of the car?

To answer the original question (from past experience with other cars):

You are correct in your thinking. Black in general will show dirt a lot. Silver is actually the best in my experience. I was amazed at how much dirt it would hide.

Black is also more prone to showing scratches, swirls, etc.

I would say silver is A LOT easier to maintain, but if you keep on top of the black, you should be able to keep it looking good.

NAVILESRX8 01-05-2004 06:08 PM

love my black one.

But in a perfect world, my 1st choice is Yellow, then Blue, then Red, then Black. I have no idea how I ended up with a black one. I just did......

how often do you guys have to wax or better yet zaino your black cars to keep them from scratching or getting swirls?

What is this Zaino product?
Thanks
Jeff

zoom44 01-05-2004 06:26 PM

silver is much easier to maitain. it doesn't show the dirt nearly as much as the black.

DaveT 01-05-2004 06:39 PM

I'm guessing you have never had a black car before? Consider what draws you to it. For most of us, black is seductive (my wife even named mine Elvira) and does not show body panel separations as much as other colors, so you really view the lines of the car without seeing door, hood, trunk edges. On the other hand, it takes more work to keep it looking nice. I agree with i3man that you should get what trips your trigger, not what some poll suggest is best for you. With cars like these, you first fall in lust. Love comes later. If you're happy, why do you care what others think?

idle0ne 01-05-2004 07:15 PM

as stated i could care less about other people's opinions i wanted to know base on experience which one was harder to maintain and if it took a great deal more time maintaining the look of the car. such as how often do you have to wax or zaino the car

and Zaino products can be found here since someone asked what they were http://www.zainobros.com

Wash it when you think it's dirty. A black car almost always looks dirty. Black cars show swirl marks most easily. Swirl marks are caused by washing.

The car looks good in black, though (with the red interior). How much appearance work is needed depends on the appearance you find acceptable and the environment it's driven in.

well vermont winters... it will be parked as much as i can handle seeing it just sit while i drive my 1990 subaru legacy junker for the winters.

i will park it under a car cover and probably a movable car port

mamccubbin 01-05-2004 11:54 PM

I used Zaino in late August, and it's still holding up well despite some snow and salt. During the summer months, it stayed amazingly clean and cleaned up really easily. My plan is to use Zaino in the spring and fall.

I had the exact same choice in colors, silver vs black. I have a black dodge durango. Nothing looks better than cleanly washed black paint job. BUT only for ONE day. After that every scrath, dust mite, etc. shows. I selected the silver for several reasons.
1. none of the curves in the well designed body gets lost. you can see each angle of the design.
2. matches the wheel rims
3. everything matches, silver and black
4. I can go a week without washing and sill looks new.

good luck

mamccubbin 01-06-2004 11:31 PM

And while jerrymac likes the silver because "you can see each angle of the design," I like the black because the car looks a little more seamless. When I first saw the 8, I didn't like the way the junction between the front and rear doors looked. But with the black, it all sort of blends together.
