Clear markers - Indiana fines?

Im in indiana, and i was wondering what the fine is for having clear markers? I read in another post that it is illegal in indiana to have clear markers, even if you have the amber bulbs....

Anyone happen to know, or know where i could obtain such information?

Thanks!

Check your DMV Website for vehicle codes?

Why bother replying if all you're going to do is tell them to search?

IC 9-19-6-10
Clearance and marker lamps and reflectors; illumination and visibility
(c) A side marker lamp must be capable of being seen and distinguished under normal atmospheric conditions at the times lights are required under IC 9-21-7-2 at a distance of five hundred (500) feet from the side of the vehicle on which the side marker lamps are mounted.
http://www.state.in.us/legislative/i.../ar19/ch6.html

sounds like clear markers are ok

PS most DMV web sites are useless for this type of information

I think the best way is to walk into a police station or if you see an officer, just ask them. They should know the answer to that the best for your area.

Edit: Doh. I had this all typed up a bit ago but busy at work. Seems Laythor solved your question.

Also on that page:

IC 9-19-6-8
Clearance and marker lamps and reflectors; color displayed or reflected
Sec. 8. (a) A front clearance lamp, marker lamp, and reflector mounted on the front or on the side near the front of a vehicle must display or reflect an amber color.
Clear lens and amber bulb is OK for the light, but this sounds like the reflector needs to be amber. Or does the "or" in "display or reflect" mean that you're legal as long as the amber bulb is on and you're never in reflector mode?

My take is that the light emitting from the clearance/marker fixture (my word) must be amber in color. It can be done either with the bulb or lens. The "reflect" part just means that it can be a reflector and not necessarily need to be illuminated. If it is just a reflector, it must be amber.

So, IMAO, you should be just fine with clear sides and amber bulb. But, you should ask an officer (or two or three) if you don't feel comfortable enough with our opinions.

so you would either need to have your side markers on all the time to be emitting or have amber reflectors to be safe under the letter of the law. of course that's just my interpretation. so ken's answer seems to be in line with how i'm reading it.

Sounds like the law in most states.. lens can be clear as long as when it's throwing amber light when lit.

I would follow everyone's advice and double check with an officer just to be sure. I find state troopers are the best for these type of questions.

Actually the law in most states (sounds like including Indiana) is that the corner marker must REFLECT amber as well as illuminate. This is for safety, so even if your car is parked on the side of the road, another cars headlights will reflect off the front and rear corner markers. Your markers must be visible from 500 ft at night whether your lights are on or not. This is Federal regulation for cars being sold in the US, and most states adopt those same rules for how a car can be modified.

The clear corners have no reflective surfaces, so they don't even reflect white. So, technically clear corners are illegal in most states (there are a few that don't specify reflectivity) and it would be illegal to sell a new car with clear corners in the US.

Now the good news: I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket for having clear corners. I have them in my car and have lived in both OR and WA with it and both states specify amber reflectivity. I don't even have amber bulbs in my (white LEDs). It's one of those things that just isn't going to get you pulled over. The dealership I go to actually has a new RX-8 in the showroom that they gussied up with all the Mazdaspeed parts and are selling as a new car... they also put clear corners on it.

Indiana law seems just like what we have here in CA.

The clear corner itself is perfectly legal as long as the light emitted from it is amber in color. I said "screw it" and put in super white LED's.

Hmmm. I wonder how many things I could conceivably have illegal on my car at one time.

Clear corners.
White Corner lights.
Front License plate in windshield - this is technically legal but I've had cops bitch at me for it.
Drivers/Passenger door window tint.
Tint on the windshield below 6".
Too many forward facing white lights.
Louder than stock exhaust if I moved to Mass.
Tread depth on tires

There are lots of petty things you could get hit width.

my clears came from mazda all I did was replace the bulb with a stealth bulb. The reflector is amber so they show amber (a lighter amber) but amber nonetheless. I've been in several states and have had no problems. Once you get them, you'll be able to see for yourself.

I live in northern Indiana and I have clear corners and clear lights. Looks sweet.

Unless you have a really attentive cop I think you'll be okay. I've been running this setup for three years now and I have yet to have an issue.

I am in Indy and I have had my '04 for 3 years, been pulled over twice during that time, it was never an issue. The likelihood of getting fined for that kind of thing is very, very low IMHO.

We have a ton of 8 owners in the indyrx8club and it has never come up that I am aware of with our membership either and most of us have clear corners and amber bulbs.

It is the case but most law enforcement officers don't bother pulling people over for clear corner infractions. This is typically what they call an "add-on" ticket.

ie: you're speeding, cop pulls you over, you mouth off, so he "adds-on" other small tickets. (tint, front plate, clear corners, etc)
