Question check engine light and gas fumes??

Hi all, just got my 06 RX-6 a month ago. Filled up my tank on thursday. Drove it to work on Friday, no problems. Drive it on Saturday, its fine. parked it, got in it and started it back up.........check engine light in my face. Car has 1300 some miles on it. I called up my sales guy, he thinks its a defective gas cap as he says they've been replacing a lot of gas caps on mazdas and would get back to me on monday to see if they have the part in stock. I still want them to check the codes though. The car doesn't appear to drive any differently.

However!! Last night, i was driving with 2 other friends in the car. all of sudden i smell massive gas fumes for about 2 miles in my car, no other cars on the road or around the area at the time. so it has to be my car! its so smelly that i'm afraid that my car going to explode at one point. It was one of those smells that you get when you're refueling at the gas station, thats how bad the gas fumes are. But then getting back into the car last night, no gas fumes........what would cause a car to expose so much gas fumes while driving?? i mean i dont think i have a leak in my tank...because gas mileage and range seems to be the same. i dont see any fluids on the floor.

Oil level is fine. I guess what i'm asking is, anyone experience this problem?? I guess i'll just have to wait till maybe sometime next week to get this all checked out by the dealer. Could it really be as simple as replacing a gas cap??

The horrible smell, no, I have never experianced that. I have thrown a CEL for not tightening the gas cap though.

If your gas cap is not sealing properly, fumes will leak out. As you drive, the gas in the tank warms up a bit and expands due to heating resulting from its proximity to the exhaust system and drivetrain components. And when it expands, pressure inside the tank increases and the gaseous fumes are forced out through the non-sealing gas cap. At least that's my guess. There are other components of the gas fume containment system that could be the problem so have the dealer check it out.
