CEL frequently switches on/off

My CEL came on about a week ago after getting gas. Didn't pull the code, but I tightened my loose gas cap and the CEL turned off shortly there after. Same basic scenario occured a few days later, again fixed by tightening gas cap.

My CEL came back on yesterday, however, despite the fact that it had been 2+ days since gassing up. Has anyone heard of a gas cap going bad and/or losing its ability to tighten properly with age and use (my car has @ 65K odo)?

I really hope this is just the gas cap and not something bigger...

Yes.................please do a search(use advanced search) and you will see that this is a known issue. Most times a new cap solves it, but I have heard of one person that had to have the filler neck replaced.
Make sure when you put it on that you at least hear it click about 5-6 times!

If this CEL happens to pop on and flash then go off when you are redlining the car, then it's most likely a misfire and you need to look at coils, plugs, and wires.

get the code pulled to verify the issue.
I always use the 3 click method and it hasn't let me down yet.

Random misfire.....I'm sure you know that and you don't have to be redlining to get this. This is still usually coils, plugs, and or wires.....especially if you haven't changed the plugs or coils and you have 30k+ on your car!

Glad to know the gas cap is the likely culprit. I don't think this is connected to playing about near the redline at all. I don't redline my car all that often now that I have 4 new points on my license.

Well......you can go to an Autozone or somewhere and get the code read and then we will know for sure.

Gas cap code......if I remember correctly is:
P0442 EVAP system leak detected (small leak) ON 2 EVAP system

redlining doesn't mean speeding or driving recklessly and will help your engine last longer.
