Car Noises

Hi I've been driving my 09 Rx8 for about 8 months now and I, like most people here, love the car to bits. However, i have to say that I do find the car a bit noisy, in terms of road noise, and those little random squeaks from the interior, especially when the road is not exactly at its smoothest..

Is there anything that I can do to reduce all these noises?

Will a change of tyres reduce the noise of the road from the tyres?

Cheers.

I'm not sure how much new tires would help with the issues. Some noises are well known and there are fixes posted in this forum.

Myself, I've had my 04 since new and I've always had a sunroof rattle and a few other things. I accept them in the car. I believe the car is solid otherwise because I've never had any other issues out of mine. To my knowledge, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all Rx models have had mysterious rattles and creaks.

So, try to be a little more specific where the noises are coming from and I'm sure others will chime in.

Yeah I hear noises hear and there, but it's rare...
Maybe since the car is running on 19's it makes it harsher to drive?

Where do you live? sometimes when its cold i get rattles that are pretty annoying. One rattle i fixed was the interior trunk door (the thingy in the middle of the back seats) i pushed down on it really hard and made sure it was in perfectly and it stopped. hope this helps

I don't have any rattles. It is, however, not the quietest car in the world. There's the sweet sound of the rotary - wouldn't want to get rid of that. Also more general driveline and road noise than an ordinary car would have. About right for a sports car.

Tire noise does depend on tires. Look at the noise column in the rating charts at Tire Rack. See how your current tires rate, and what might be quieter.

You do realize there's a TSB to remedy the sunroof rattle; you don't have to accept it if you choose not to.

Hey, new owner of the RX-8 40th edition with only 15k. Love the car but on rough roads or hitting small bumps somewhere around the radio area emits a high pitch chip but canot pin down the location. It is a very audible noise like plastic rubbing on plastic. Wondered if anyone has had same noise and pinned the source. Thanks

Small rock chips between the steering column and plastic.

Move your column up and down and search.

Unfortunately as with all other threads, there is a lot of crap in here, but this thread is pretty decent for finding/fixing those annoying little rattles.

I had a couple of squeaks and rattles that drove me nuts the first couple of weeks I had the car (bought used). The biggest offender was a rattle I swore was coming from my dash, but it turns out it was my rear view mirror. I tightened the sucker down and it went away. The second was coming from the trunk area and had a noticeable metallic sound to it, which wound up being the large metal ring that attaches the spare tire to the screw post on the mount. Both easy fixes.

Despite being an 04, the car has been pretty solid and quiet otherwise. Picking up some tire noise is normal and shouldn't be anything to worry about provided a visual inspection shows your tires are in good health. It could just be your specific tread pattern. With so much plastic built into the interior, it's inevitable that you're going to have some rattles here and there, especially over rough surfaces or in colder weather. The glove box and door panels also seem to be rattle traps for a lot of people. If some of your rattles are coming from the glove box area, check out one of the DIYs for air cabin filter removal to see how to pull it out and possibly fortify it.

I live in North Carolina so cool temps are a non-factor. Tires are new Bridgestones set to proper psi. I also checked the rear storage and it is quiet. While having my wife drive on semi smooth asphalt, I was able to pin it to the panel around the audio. It is somewhere behind it, making the constant bird-like chirp in direct relation to the road surface. That plastic is thin and appears quite easy to crack. You have been great with your help. Have you ever taken this panel off before?

cars make noise... when I worked for GMC people would always bring in cars, and pay to have parts replaced that were making noises. Just because it makes a sound doesn't mean there is something wrong.

take brakes for instance. a lot of high performance brakes squeal, and actually alllllll brakes squeal. The difference is that if you turn the rotor with a fine enough blade it squeals at such a high pitch you cant hear it.
