Car hit

So after church Easter Sunday me and my folks went to eat--this dude in like a 95/96 Montero backed up into the front of my parked car. He came in and asked who's car it was, he had like 20-25ft of space between his spot and my car Everything was cool until his dumbass wife started talking-- "this is minor blah blah blah" she and my mom had an exchange of words--I then got in her face and said "I think you need to go back over there " The husband was just shaking his head because his wife aggravated the initially calm situation. Of course he doesn't want to have his insurance take care of it, I was like "I feel that--I'll get an estimate and call you first. I don't care who takes care of it as long as its done expeditiously" So long story short, its $523 worth of work--paint is scuffed and chipped in some places--small dent and crack as well. Luckily since the car is dark--you'd look over it, looks like dirt. So I'm waiting to talk to the dude today to see what his move is. I'm still having the rest of my system completed this week though--the show must go on. Also while it was a seemingly grand act of altruism for him to come in and tell me--I think he did so because he didn't know who had seen the event happen. Either way, i'm glad it is minor and so far he's somewhat cooperative.

Sorry to hear that. If you haven't already, I'd strongly recommend finding out what the deadline is for filing a police report. If this guy suddenly gets flakey, starts stalling, or making excuses, you need to file a police report before the deadline as proof to persue his insurance. Sounds like good chances are his wife may talk him out of it.

This is advice from a cop friend of mine when the exact same situation happened to me. Sure enough, they tried screwing me.

I actually went directly to a police station and picked up a form--I'm filling it out as we speak.

sorry about your car man. Look out for him, and be ready. I hope you get your car fixed up just as new.

Keep on the lookout for those flags though...maybe you should let them know you have the police report all filled out if they decide to change their minds

On the last day of the police report expiration you can call them and say you're turning in the police report and are still up for the cash offer but now it's $1,500, not $500. A surcharge for an attempted f--king.

At least he was a man about it and came in to find out who the owner was. 9 times out of 10 you would come out and see your car messed up with a note or any clue as to who did damage. That would have really made you pissed off.

Ok update--the guy is giving me a check for $580 tomorrow morning. I'm gonna go to his bank and cash it--the car is going into the shop Monday. He tried to get out of adding in for the rental car; but we agreed upon $20 a day so there you have the $580 total. I'll just use my other car and put the money toward replacing my already cracked foglight. I'm driving my Millenia right now until my soundsystem install is complete anyway.

True but probably 9 out of 10 people that leave a note will have second thoughts and most likely back out of their offer.

EDIT: Glad it worked out for you Dre

Sorry to hear about your car...too many stories like this recently, hopefully he wont be giving you a check without funds in the bank...I'd tell him you want a money order or cash, a check can be a little scary.

GOD BLESS...hopefully you will have your 8 back to normal ASAP!

At least it looks like he's cooperating, but it looks like you know not to trust him until you have cash in your hand

Sounds like it will all work out. I always call the police when there is an accident, regardless of who the othe party wants to pay for it. Accounts have a way of changing with time, as the following story shows.

My son was in the drive-through lane at McD's. A 16-year old in front of him had overshot the speaker and had backed up. Needless to say, she forgot she was in reverse, and my son did not notice the back-up lights were on (he was a newer driver as well), and when the order-taker said "please pull forward", she backed into my son, damaging only his front bumper. She immediately called her dad who said he would pay for the damage. We got an estimate of about $350 dollars (chrome bumper replacement) and he said we were crazy. He then threatened to say that my son had rear-ended his daughter, and he would report it to our insurance company. After much discussion, and our threatening to call the bar (he was lawyer, if you can believe it), he paid up, but it could have gotten nastier.

My wife re-ended in min by a police woman over the weekend. She was driving a SUV. The SUV bubmper was tore up bad. Mine has a 1" crack in the bumper aty the bottom. Bumper 300.00, paint and labor 350.00. I thought the bumper was pretty reasonable considering it wraps around to the fenders. The black below is part of the bumper also. One huge piece. Her insurance is handleing it. There was a police report. She called the local police as she was from out of state. Nice woman who was on her way home from a funeral for her mom. I felt sorry for her because with the police report here in Indiana it automatically went to her insurance company so she did not have the option of paying herself.
