the coils are easy to check, you check the 3 leads like you would a transistor. The manual has the readings you should be getting..
In my experience however, bad coils do not limit power in the Upper ranges, rather it's more < 5k. You'd get DANGEROUSLY low power and near stalling under 5k, to the point that you need a mile of free space to pull out in traffic.

YW, I could be wrong too, but i messed with the coiles a bit.. ALso, I think i've previously pozsted the readings you should be getting from the coil test.
