Yeah man, I've been searching this stupid forum for months on end, and I can't figure out what a supercharger is or what a turbocharger is. Man, this sucks.

One would wonder though, if he doesn't know the difference between the two, why is the thread calling all Superchargers? Turbo guys can't answer the question?

I are offended.

I'm gonna talk outta my **** here about something I know nothing about. As I understand it (which I don't really) you might use the analogy (...and this is a very bad analogy...) of a person that either uses steroids (enhancing what they already have, ala supercharger) versus someone who has bionic limbs (an addition or replacement to what was already there, ala turbo). Hopefully that's clear as mud.

Is one better than the other? Probably, but depends on what variables you put into the equation that determines which comes out on top. Muscle cars generally lean towards superchargers where tuner cars generally lean towards turbo.

Main reason I stay away from turbos is because turbo lag drives me nuts (that second or two between when you stomp on the gas and when the car reacts, due to the turbo spinning up). I've had zero experience with superchargers and only slightly more than zero in regards to turbo. Told ya' I was talking outta my ****.

I see flames coming.

Supercharging is simply a system that forces air into an engine. Not many people realize this, but a turbo is a supercharger. If your car has a turbo on it, then your car is supercharged.

The two main types of supercharging are mechanical and exhaust turbine.

The exhaust turbine type of supercharging is what people call a turbo charger. This system uses the cars exhaust to power a turbine that will force compressed air into the engine. The main and most simplistic difference between this type of supercharging when compared to a mechanical supercharger is that a turbo setup is powered by the exhaust gases of your car.

Like the any other accessory on an engine such as the car's alternator, a Mechanical supercharger is powered by the engines crankshaft. This system simply uses an accessory belt to power the superchargers compressor along with the other accessories on your car.

I hope this helps you understand the key difference between the two [RX-8].[Monster].
