Did something stupid

I gave one of my daughters friend a ride in the 8 after I had a few beers. Beer brains and young girl in car, bad mix for old guy. So, I make this small loop that includes an on ramp and off ramp with a short stretch of Interstate. I run it up to 9k on each shift up the on ramp, swing across to the farthest passing lane still accelerating and look down, 105mph! It was about then that I remembered the other stupid thing I did, forgot to renew my plates. I slowed down, hit the off ramp, got back to my daughters place, and decided to drive slowly home.

Other than that, it is short accelerations up to around the speed limit to the next stop light around here.

Except for a few nice passes, lane changes, accelerations from stops and turns, I end up driving it like a family car.

The car's amazing potential is so severely limited by the street and traffic conditions, that it hurts me more to see it go unfulfilled than enjoy its limited use. I wonder if many feel the same... Sorry if this has been talked about before, I just feel blue. I just feel that I'd be beter off commiting in a Civic
This is a highly significant and relevant post. I came to the exact same conclusion myself. I had a love hate relationship with my 2004 and could never really put my finger on ast to why. I later did an advanced driving course and I thought wow, this car is phenominal on the track. Simply amazing. The handling at speed was out of this world. When I later came down to earth I realised its limitations on the street. That's why I maintain that the Rx8 it is an amazing car that is simply, and sadly, wasted on the street.

and it wont save you against laser.

for that you need laser jammers, and they are a bit trickier than a radar detector to install. expensive too.

edit: are they even legal?

its becoming close to the threshold where its not worth it to stop for a speeding ticket.

In some places in canada if you're going i believe 50 over the limit they impound your car (sometimes crushing it) and you get a $10,000 fine.

Sure you "shouldnt" be speeding and all that garbage, but do you think the majority of people will stop for police? I surely wouldn't... Jump a few curbs, side swipe some cars trying to get away sounds like a much cheaper option.

Its cheaper until they call out the helicopters and spike strips, or get your plate number and wait for you to get home.

The great thing about living in a large city is that cops are not around as much. When I lived in San Angelo TX, a 100k pop town, you couldn't drive 5 miles without seeing a cop. After midnight it became predatory, they'd stop you for anything they could. Everyone knew to stay off the roads or you'd have to deal with them, it was horrible.

For the year or so I drove an older Camaro, I got pulled over 18 times, never once received a ticket. They just wanted to see if I was fucked up, maybe search the car for some weed.. I hated them so much..

But in Houston you can break the rules a bit and you're not instantly in trouble. When the freeways are empty you can actually get some speed. Back roads are usually empty at night, playtime can be had quite easily.. Plus, with so many people around, there's always somebody driving faster than you.

You learn to take certain routs that let you "drive" the car, and you try to avoid the stop-n-go crowded residential mess..

Thats nothing, some dude where i live got pulled over more then 80 times in the course of maybe 3 years... so in the area of 1-2 times a week... ended up getting a few million in settlement because the cops were harassing him for being black.

I guess people would be lucky to live in a city with great roads to cruise/fang your car on. I've been on some great roads in the Valleys behind L.A., San Diego, and myself driving in the National Parks on Sydney's outskirts.

Toly:

I share in the frustration. I'm now down to driving my RX8 part of one day per week if I'm lucky, as I'm tired of using it for the daily commute. No joy in traffic and parking at work means a layer of dust on my car a couple of hours after I park. Laziness? I don't know. I think a wash should be good for two days anyway.

When I do get it out on the road it's hard to get a chance to open it up; I like spirited driving but at the same time, I don't like pissing people off by aggressive and dangerous driving in traffic like the other ********.

Moot point soon - I'll have to put it away for the winter. (sigh... road salt, rust, visibility etc.)
