Broken Transmission

So yesterday i was driving and went for a 1st to 2nd gear shift and i hear huge grinding noise and the shifter doesnt go in (scared the **** out of me) so i slowed a bit and then went through the gears and everything seemed fine. Then today the transmission shifted fine, downshifted great and no problems.... until once again I went for a 1st-2nd shift and the grinding noise happend again and the gear didnt go. At this point, realizing some sort of problem, i slow to a stop and then try to do another 1st-2nd gear shift being careful to make sure it isnt me thatsd the problem, and once again it doesnt go in and grinds. So now i know there is definitly a problem, and as i continue to drive (almost to my house by now) for a minute or so my shifter felt like it was moving around in syrup and was difficult to get into any gear (especialy 5th) but no grinding noise or anything, simply had sludge like movement. Btw, the car would still shift into gears and once in a gear accelerate fine and no problems, and as long as you shift very slowly you wouldnt know a difference...except for the sludge feeling that happend for a little bit. SO my guess is that the syncros are fried or something of that nature, i do not think it is the gears since it drives fine (once in gear). Im taking it to the dealer tomorrow to have them see whats up and hopefully they wont give me **** about how its "my fault" (i mean i could understand if 1st gear was fried, but not this sorta thing) also i have the borla exhaust installed so hopefully they wont give me problems about that either. Anyways id like to hear what some of your inputs are about this sorta thing, my car has almost 3000 miles on it and hasnt had a problem yet.

Damn, that sucks.

Dont sweat the warranty. A manufacturer cant void a part under warranty unless there is a direct corilation (sp?) between the aftermarket part and the broken part.

sucks big time.

I would believe it would be covered. agree with cam on the warranty. borla won't affect transmission. Hope things are quick and easy for you.

I took my manual in for the recall on the transmission/damper, and afterwards I have a hard time pushing it from 1st to 2nd when the engine is cold. I don't remember this being a problem before. I also feel (but don't hear) a grinding sound if I try to put it in 2nd before the car's warmed up. I get around this by simply going 1st->3rd for the first 15 minutes.

Anyone else have this problem?

My tranny does some weird things too. Sometimes it crunches big time going into 5th from 6th. One time it felt like you said "going through syrup". Another time I put it in reverse and let the clutch out and there was no gear. I put it in 1st then back in reverse and the gear was there. Weird box.

To me it sounds like a problem with teh actual shifter itself, but thats just me. sounds like it must be catching in between gears.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Add tranny to the list of major defects with the new RX-8/Ford pinto the way my car is looking.

Tranny, defective Cat. Convert., Oil pan, lack of HP, cracked tailights due to improper heat treating, etc. etc. etc.

Dude that sucks, I hope they give you a descent ride to use while your 8 is on the mend.

good luck on the repair. Had you installed an aftermarket flywheel in some rinky dink shop you better believe that the dealer would try to wheasel it's way out of the repair. But you should be fine.

Its the shifter fork. Take it in, they will drop the tranny and fix it. I had it done with my 8. Its no biggie. It drove better then stock after they fixed it. Before you post stuff like this search the forum. The answer is here.

well i just picked the car up from the dealer because they had 3 people drive the car and compared it to a new cars transmission for the feel of it and they claim that there is nothing wrong. However they told me that if it gave me any problems again that they would drop the transmission and take a look. I know there is something wrong but they dont seem to think so. Well time will tell... hopefully the transmission wont fry itself to bits going 70 down the highway and then id be really screwed and have to tow it..arghh
