Question Breaking in my new engine - questions

Hello All

well after 42 days of waiting, it seems that I will be getting my RX8 back today with a new engine in it. YEAH!!

My question is this.

What is the BEST way to carefully BREAK IN my new engine?

Lots of freeway driving?

No freeway driving?

Vary the speed? No long drives at the same speed?

Watch the RPM's? Rev it up?

Change the oil at 500 miles?

Any extra additives to the gas or oil I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance

The mazda book says "No special brake-in is needed, avoid keeping the engine in the high rpm range for long periods of time, and dont cruise at the same rpm for long."

So basicaly drive how you want, venture into the higher rpm but dont stay there for too long, and dont cruise at 1 rpm (ie set the cruise control and drive on the freeway).

Stop and go trafic is best for breaking an engine in. But dont neglect the high rpm...this engine was meant to rev.

Thats my take on it from MAZDA.

I followed Racing Beat for my brake in : http://www.racingbeat.com/RX8%20Break%20in.htm

Vary your RPM, and don't floor it when starting off, that should be it.

I left my factory fill oil in for 1k miles (over the course of that I had added 1qt) then at 3k miles I changed it again, then at 5k, next will be 8k and every 3k miles after that.

Also at 8k I will be changing to all synthetic fluids, engine, trany and diff.

Congratulation Okto.

Please keep us informed about the quality of the labor performed by the dealer.

As far as the break-in, how'd you break it in the last time? Do the opposite!

Yeah, I love that bit in the manual. "There are no special break-in instructions..... Here are the break-in instructions....". I guess it's a Clintonian thing; some problem with the definition of "are". Mazda does a similar thing with the synthetic oil question. I think if you put their engineers end-to-end they wouldn't reach a conclusion.
