The rate of burn-off is pretty slow. I burn 1 quart per 1000 miles; once a month I put a little bit of new oil in. There is an oil change maintenance interval that needs to be followed. For easy reference, go to mazdausa.com, register, and download their searchable PDF owner's manual. It saves time in the future.

These will give you some ideas to start with, with regard to break-in, oil selection, oil viscocity, and an introduction to common and opposing beliefs. There are also many pre-mix threads elsewhere, although I do not partake in that activity.

The manual says, mazda recommends checking the oil every second fuel filling.

It says check it every 2 fill ups of gas, but I go through half a quart by the time I need an oil change and they top it off anyway. So for some people it's not even an issue
