Is it just more or does the 8 have a bad blind spot? Has anyone else found this problem?

If the side mirrors are adjusted properly there is no blind spot. It seems people like to look at the side of the car rather then adjust their mirrors out farther so they see the road.

There is a serious blind spot...

I was on my way back home from Dallas, Tx yesterday on the freeway and I swear that I didnt see anyone beside me. But happens to be a little ****-*** Honda Civic Rice Burner flying up next to me while I was trying to move over to the left lane... Stupid person honked at me which gave me some rage and i gave it some gas and passed him to show him who was boss.

Anyways watch out for those blind spots.

 

Maybe the taller you are the less problems these apparant blind spots are, I used to own a MX-3 Precidia which I was told had the WORST blind spot but never had an issue. Any other 6'2" + people out there have any issues with blind spots?

Well i am 5'11" and my blind spot is crazy.

Folks, comes with the territory. Adjust your mirrors, use a headcheck (LOOK where you're about to go, fool!), and if you don't like it, go trade it for a Honda Accord or some such boring car ...

Now, if only Mazda made an RX-8 rag top ... NO blindspots there!

Before you rant and bitch about "any damn car costing this much ought to not have blind spots" just walk outside and look around the OUTSIDE of your car.

Admire those sexy curves ...

Notice the arch of the roofline into the body work ...

And stand back and say "Thank GOD the stylists didn't worry about the fools whining about blind spots!"

i've got my mirror adjusted so that you can barely see the side of the car, that's how I was taught to adjust it. The problem is usually when I try to look over my shoulder, you really can't see ****.

 

When I do the head check to compensate for the blind spot I keep finding myself looking through the rotor in the seat back. I wonder if the engineers designed it that way J/K.

 

Backing up, especially turning to the right (back end swinging right) is a total leap of faith, I'll agree. Can't see **** from that angle ... I'm using my mirror and jumping around in the car trying to see something - the passenger seat back, the B pillar AND the C pillar all interfere.

Driving forward, I learned at the Skip Barber racing school, and also at BMW's school of Performance Driving, to adjust the outside mirrors so you see the ENTIRE LANE next to you - you don't see any part of your car ... but if you lean your head 1-2" to the right or left, you can see the car - tha allows you to see something in the mirror and if you're not clear on location, lean your head to see your car with it. But, if you've done this right, a car will never be in blind spot unless it is directly pacing you evenly - and then you'd see it in a head-check. But cars running in your rear quarter zones will be easily seen, and then the pass from the side mirror to the rear mirror without disappearing.

If all is really right in the world (depends more on the car than the adjustment), if a car is adjacent to you, you will see it's back end in the rear view mirror, and as you pass it, more and more of it is visible, in the side mirror, then it will start to appear in the rear mirror, you will see it diminish in the side, etc.

It takes getting used to but this works like a charm.

 

Hell you can fit a F350 truck with a camper on the back in it :D

I just find that if you go fast enough you don't loose them for long!!

 

I buy the little stick on mini mirrors at walmart, autozone, etc. I've had them on all my cars.

With it in place, there is no blind spot. I never turn my head when making lane changes. I've never come close to causing an accident when using them.

The only problem I've found is after a few months/years they tend to lose their ability to reflect. I'd love to find some made out of better quality materials.

 

Use a 1" round mirror on thr drivers side.

 

Hey Stew I learned that driving a forklift.

Just set your mirrors so you can't see the side od the car. No blind spots.

But that's not my problem!

It has major blind spots when backing up. Almost smashed it 3 times and I always look behind me.

Can't wait to get a rear spoiler. Then I can judge the rear, but still gonna have that backend swing right problem.

Damn... and I use to pride myself by backing up to objects within 1 inch all the time.

This is one mean machine to back up. Maybe the seat is so much lower than my other vehicles that I'm having a hard time.

A blindspot is evident on the 8 but it's not the worse I've ever experienced.
Try changing lanes in an S2K with the roof up..... now that's a blind spot!

 

instead of setting the mirrors so I just barely can't see the sides, I sit in my normal driving position and set the side mirrors so that there is no overlap with the rearview mirror - objects leaving the rearview immediately enter one of the side mirrors. Gives me the widest viewing angle possible without leaving any significant blind spots. I know, very similar to not seeing the sides of your car (cause I can't), but the calibration is different.

 

Driving forward:
There are no blind spots, period. Just set your wing mirrors properly, which for me means ALL the way out on both sides. I'm 5' 11" if it matters. As others have said, if you can see any portion of your own car in either wing mirror, with your head in it's normal driving position, then the mirror is pointed too far inside.

Backing up:
Major blind spots. I may get the hang of it someday, but I may not. It's scary. Like Razz1 I'm going to add a spoiler, probably Derwankel's lip spoiler. Still won't help with the right rear corner though.

Sorry, but you need to be called on this post. Owning an RX-8 doesn't mean you own the road. If you tried to change lanes into someone that was already there they SHOULD honk at you. That's why they put horns in cars, to prevent collisions. The appropriate response from you would have been, "Sorry" and a smile. "Rage" is for video games, not for driving real cars on real roads with real people's lives at risk. Stop acting like a 16 year old.

 

I had to give the "i'm sorry" wave a couple times.

The thing with adjusting your side-view mirrors is I use them to back out making sure I don't run over the lawn or run into a curb which I use quite frequently for that purpose. I do the lean forward and look into my sideviews to catch a better angle when making lane chanes. My right rear bumper has took some abuse from the rear blind spot.

 

The only blind spot I experience is the one to the right created by the rear view mirror. I agree with previous posters' sentiments about adjusting the mirrors, I never have any issue on the sides. The one created by the mirror is pretty bad... I essentially have to duck under it to see to make sharp right turns.

Im only 5'3" and yes I agree there is a blind spot I have to look at the side mirror and turn my head as well

Have you adjusted your RV mirror upward? It's got two pivot points.

The one on the back side of the mirror is the one to use for adjusting the RV so you can see out the back window.

The other pivot point is where the post comes out of the windshield bracket. Swivel the whole post upwards. That way the RV won't block your view to the right.
