Big Road Trip!

Greetings, just getting ready for my first really big road trip with the RX. I've had it for two years and I've been treating her like a Ferrari (always clean, always waxed, always in the garage on bad weather etc) SO, now I'm ready to get her out and let her run. I'm driving south from Alaska, and going to put probably around 3500-4000 miles on the car with trips to Wash, Mont, and Idaho, any comments, advice, or pointers for long periods of driving on the RX? thanks.

She's great on the road!
Make sure you have spare oil, window washer fluid, and all that jazz.
Check all your fluids before you leave, tire pressure and make sure that you grab a coffee on the go

Don't follow trucks too closely on the Alcan. Thrown stones can mess up that aluminum hood.

and the oil coolers too, and they are not cheap!

edit. keep cold drinks in a small cooler, a long trip will keep coffee warm in the cup warmers/holders.

get a spare tire kit if you dont have one. last thing is to have a blow out when you dont have a spare.

Enjoy the ride. It's a great road trip car. When I bought mine, I picked it up in Washington and drove it home to Utah. Enjoyed every minute of it.

I tried to convince my buddy to go on a road trip with me in the 8. He alluded to it not being reliable enough....chicken

Which reminds me, I'll soon be taking a road trip as well. Though it will only last 3 hours going, and 3 hours coming back... I'm going to drive to a different city and attend another HPDE, and will be taking my wife and daughter alongside so that they may join my adventurous weekend!

OP, I can feel your excitement along with my very own! Have fun & be safe!

Hello all, just finished up the big road trip. Put 5000 miles on my car in three and a half weeks! Everything went well, except got a rock to the windshield (in Idaho) that spread across my field of vision two days later, hey, you knew something was going to happen in 5000 miles, I'll take it.

Drove from Prince Rupert 1100 miles to Seattle, about 20 hours. Then a week later drove over to Bozeman Montana. Wow, God bless ID and MT for the 75 mph speed limit! Washington was 70 across most of the state. Got a ticket in British Columbia, the guy said I was going 80, I think it was 75, but the speed limit is 62.5 (100 kph). I try to follow the law, but lets face it, 60 is too slow for 20 hours of driving through miles and miles of open country. Anyways, I guess we'll call it a contribution to the good people of Canada.

I once drove a 280Z across the whole country, my record was 13 hours in once day. I love to drive my truck, and I don't mind driving the rentals, but these days I'm good for about six hours a day. Enter the RX-8! She is a ROAD MACHINE. This car just eats up the miles, wow, what a pleasure to drive! I did several 9 hours days, and once did 11 hours, so smooth, so solid, superb. I took my two great kids on the trip, their mother stayed behind with her new husband, but I digress. Took my two great kids, 11 year old daughter and 13 year old son. They switched off the front seat, both don't mind the back seat, it really is like sitting in a private jet, then we had the trunk pretty much filled in, and the seat behind me had our sleeping bags and tent, car still felt great with the extra weight, but maybe if my kids were older it might not like it. One car I've been toying with getting is a hemi Charger (yeah, I know, but I'm a RX/rotary guy all the way), anyways, I thought I could fly down to Seattle, get a car, then drive it all over and drive back home to Alaska, then sell it and skip the extra money for shipping car south, maybe even make money. Of course, then I don't get to drive my RX do I? The kiddies were horrified at the thought of this plan, but maybe I'll do it someday when I need a bit more room, but the RX will be in my possession for a long time, at least until I get a new RX-8, RX-9, OR maybe the new RX-7. OK, just thought I'd pass along the info, hey, this is just because I care man, cheers.
