Best Pricing on R3s
Two that I have seen:
2009 R3 brand new with 160k miles $26,500
2009 R3 used 17,000 miles $20,000
I sold my car yesterday and am really looking in the $10 - 15K range with no sunroof. But of course when I am looking I see all these other temptations. What would be the best bonifide price on the above two? The dealer on the first one says they don't negotiate. It sat inside all winter, now is on their lot. Be nice to get it before a bunch more people test drive it, but I wouldn't consider $26,500.

I agree based on these prices. What I am wondering is what the lowest a dealer has done on a comparable car. Ie, is $26,500 really the lowest they will go? Edmunds says invoice is $2400 under retail. If the manufacturer is giving $5500, then i would think it would be possible to get $24600. Of course they may say we have kept it a year, we'll wait another few months to get the $26,500.

make and offer, walk off, you are in no hurry for a sale and will only entertain them if they play smart. say this before walking off, you can play it my way, or let the car rot on the lot, cause last i check it's 2010.
i was stupid, get the used better bang.

I just finished shopping around.
You can probably get a new one for around $25k. I just bought my '09 R3 with 5,000 miles on it, in absolutely perfect condition, for $22,900. Of course as the '09 supply gets thinner, they won't deal as much. From what I was seeing they would mark the '09 R3's down to around $25k and they would move off the lot pretty quickly. I'd see one advertised around that price, call on it, and it would be gone within about a week.

I bought my R3 new with 4 miles on it for 26k when they were running the 6k rebate back in August. You can haggle with the dealer to get a good deal. It took a week for them to make my deal but they made it happen.

It's a Cavalier
I called our local dealership... got an idiot of course. Online, it says they have a black '09 in stock.
here's the conversation, for your entertainment:
him: ya this is Mazda Sales (in this kind of a-hole voice)
me: hi, do you have any 2009 R3's on the lot?
him: a what? (again, the attitude)
me: any 2009 RX8 R3's on the lot? Any in stock? Says on the web you have a black one.
him: (brightens up with voice, all happy, thinks he has a "live one") Oh ya ya ya, um, I'm not sure, I can definitely check on that.
me: well, do you have one I can test drive?
him: Oh ya, we have a black 2010 RX3 (i **** you not, he said RX3, and I also know they didn't make any in BB in 2010. at this point, i've got the massive facepalm going)
me: does it like 5500 dollar off?
him: oh ya! i think it might! (ah... wtf?)
me: ya, well, maybe i'll stop by. maybe. *click*

With depreciation so horrible on the 8, I'd spring for the used one for 20k. Ill bet by this time next year you'll be able to find used '09 R3s for around 15k. It may be just me, but I don't think it's worth it to buy an 8 new anymore...even with the huge rebates on '09s.

I'd go with the new one if you can afford it. The used one is not a bad deal, but I wonder about the treatment of a car that's been driven around for about a year and being sold so soon, especially an RX-8. Was it broken in? Did it have regular oil changes? Has it been abused?
But then, I'm paranoid about that kind of stuff. What kind of person would buy an RX-8, drive it for a year and then sell it?
I bought new (with 400mi) for about 25,500 BEFORE taxes, etc. if I remember right.

Thanks for all the help. The used one is black, which I like better because the grille isn't as noticable. Those Mazda 3s with the big grin are an embarassment to Mazda owners everywhere. If he'd come down to $18, I would have been there today. (Its 550 miles away.)

You should be able to pick up a new 2009 R3 for $24,500. But if you can only afford $10k-$15k, then I would look for a used GT. Seen too many people get in trouble by purchasing cars that are out of their budget.

this is exactly what i paid for my 09 r3 back in january, 24.5k including the 5k rebate. of course tax, title, registration, new plate, and a road hazard on the wheels/tires brought it up over 26k so you have to factor those things in there too as well as higher insurance premiums and any yearly state/local taxes you might incur as a result of having a newer more valuable car.
