I'll just add my confirmation.

I have a 2005 (latter year build) and have had zero problems other than the tail light moisture, which was resolved under B-to-B warranty (improved gaskets).

I change my oil at 3k miles (Castrol GTX 5w30), check the oil level every other gas fillup (89 octane or better), always go easy until warmed up, and redline it almost daily.

I do use Idemitsu premix, but more personal preference than requirement (there's a lengthy thread on same, as there is on oil viscosity).

I have also upgraded to the BHR Ignition System, but you shouldn't consider same until you get some wear on your stock coils/cables.

Otherwise just the maintenance I would do on any vehicle I have ever owned (which admittedly is a bit on the over-maintenance side).

Will the car drive like a dream and give me NO problems??

This is all I want to know, and for anyone to add anything else I need to do to have no troubles at all.

Could someone who has owned an RX-8 for a considerable amount of time. i.e. 4 years or more please answer.

Thank You

I wish people were more accommodating of newcomers; often a newbie's question can be answered in the time it take to admonish them to search. There are many times when I do not have the time to search a subject online; a quick, bottom line response is something I always appreciate. But I digress…

I bought my new '05 in February, '06 and have driven it 21.5K miles. (I live in NYC and bike or take subways to get around during the week. The 8 is driven for fun on weekends, vacations, etc.)

I change the oil & filter every 3 - 4 months and check oil level every time I get gas. I use Castrol GTX 5W-20.

I follow the service schedule carefully, changing all fluids per schedule (engine coolant and brake fluid every other year, etc.)

I always let the car warm up a few minutes before heading out, and I don't rev the engine above 3K until she's fully warm. I redline 2 or 3 times every time I go for a drive. I generally drive at times and in places where there's little stop & go traffic.

Bottom line: no problems to date.

He did get reasonable replies to his first post, which was way too general to answer with more than a pointer to the search engine and FAQs. I concur that we should phrase "Search, noob" more politely. We should really learn to point newbies to the "Similar threads" list that their post generates. Looking at the very bottom is not obvious.

I thought the pounding was rather mild, considering his "feed me" followup.

His second question was very good, and drew some good replies.

In the "Bought a new 2010 RX8" thread, which was started by someone else, a bunch of people advised the OP to do proper break-in. In that thread, LOVE RX8 asks "Could someone please explain break-in period?"

It's clear he's not even attempting to search at all.

So what bothers people is when newbies pose these basic questions and are just too lazy to search. I could see how that can be annoying. Like the guy who proudly tells everyone they never wear a wristwatch – and then proceeds to ask you, several times a day, for the time.

if you have time to be a dick , then you;re obviously not doing anything important and so you have time to answer the guy.. if little things like a newbie postinga nd not searching grinds your gears then go see a doctor and get some stress pills. i just do not get why people get so dumb and upset over this. you have the right not to answer him, so don't if you do give him what he wants. aqnd the search engine on this site is not that great at all.

Let's face it, this site has been up since around 2003, so the answer to just about every question is probably on here somewhere. So I have an idea. No more posting questions, no more discussions, let's just shut the sucker down and only have the search button.

You have an excellent point.

I've been here about four years, and I've only started two threads asking questions. One got a great answer. The other got no response - which in itself was a good answer. I learned a huge amount by browsing past threads.

On the other hand...I tend to view this kind of forum as similar to a sports bar. If you go in and chat about how your team is doing today, it's great. Even if it's indistinguishable from the same conversation every other night. If you don't know anything about baseball, but come in and listen for a while before joining the flow, that's also great.

But walk in fresh, and ask why the guy on the little hill is throwing a ball at the guy wearing all the padding, and what's with the guy with the stick, it's going to turn out badly. Especially if you ask someone to read the rulebook to you because you can't be bothered to turn the pages yourself.

Over the years I've noticed newbies are improving, not in the use of the search feature but an improvement in disguising their thread with words to hide their laziness to search. Most of the time I just ignore the thread but sometimes I pop a vein or two and need to let off some steam on a bad day.

I've helped many times to answer peoples' questions- noobie or not. When I've asked questions, I've qualified what I have already learned, which then leads to my specific question. This allows potential reply-ers to know where I'm coming from when they attempt to answer my question.

I try to sense a person's thought process, which also gives me a sense of the person's personality and intent. What I value is showing a transparent and honest straightforwardness as opposed to an intent to manipulate or induce others to do things for you.

In my opinion, this guy is subtly manipulative and showing a consistent pattern of egocentrism. Is he a giver or a taker? Is he someone who gives an honest effort and is therefore dependable and reliable? When he says he did something, can you trust him? He said sometimes he needs a bottom line answer. If so, then search BEFORE asking incredibly general (this thread) and banal (break-in topic) questions. Do a diligent search first and sift through the threads diligently so that you can ask more specific, qualified, and narrowed-down questions.

I understand when some say that if we always complain about noobies asking redundant questions, then we might as well shut the forum down. But I don't complain about every noobie or criticize their every question. To me, this guy falls under a different issue that has to do with what I see clearly as a "sit on my pedestal and have others answer to me" attitude.

That is not at all my intention! I agree with Speed 8 though. Either answer the question or dont post on this thread. and I have found the search engine not that practical.

You've been lucky in this thread because no one has been a dick to you, not even me. Similarly, the complainers have been rather civil and calm with you. No one, it seems, is all stressed and upset over your thread.

There's no contentious animosity here. No one has turned this thread into a zoo. Maybe part of the situation is that you don't have a lot of experience with car forums and the dynamics of what should be expected. I assure you that when I and others are urging you to do a diligent search (and diligent sifting and reading) first, our advice is reasonable and from a point-of-view with perspective.

Finally, to use Speed 8's words, if you have the time to start a thread and read a mix of relevant and irrelevant posts and comment on BOTH, then you have the time to make an honest, responsible effort to do a proper search. That's all we're saying. It makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? Why not give it a fair and openminded try?

Anyway, buy the damn car!

Search engine is kind of hit or miss. What does work well is browsing the forums. The subject lines tend to be reasonably well thought out. There's also a strong tradition against thread jacking, so if you do start reading a thread it's very likely to stay on topic.

As far as answer or not answer goes...if someone can give you advice that will keep you from annoying people, that will enhance your experience here.

If anyone finds the search feature lacking, try using google and use "site:www.rx8club.com <keyword here>" and throw in a mix of OPERATORS to filter.
