Angry Bad Warranty Experience

I just wanted to share my experience with the dealership and the Easycare Warranty company.

I own 2004 RX-8 6-speed. No major problems... Couple of issues with my HIDS, but the fix was to use Philips HID bulbs instead of an "off brand". Anyway.

Purchased an extended warranty in December 2007. Car has about 65K miles and decided to play it safe to get an extended warranty. Did all of the maintenance on the car and no problems. Never flooded or got stuck anywhere...

Purchased the warranty in December of 2007. One day was rotating my tires and notices a few drops. Assumed it was water since it was raining pretty bad here in Phoenix. Check the drops and it was oil. Ignored it, since my oil level and consumption was roughly the same. No excessive oil consumption. Over time I noticed that more and more drops where forming. Looked under the car and notice a lot of oil and dirt around the MOP. Took the car in for the dealership to look it over and YES, my MOP is leaking oil. Glad I purchased my extended warranty!

Company denied the coverage. First they said it was an "external" component and was not part of the engine. They said that the warranty I purchased (power train) did not cover the part. Both the Service Advisor and the Finance mgr was standing there and saw the the words in "black & white" (oil poump, gaskets and lubricants are covered). After an hour on the phone, I got no where. Still denied the coverage. Went home and started sending emails like crazy (Mazda North America, APCO, Ford Motor Company). The very next day, got the warranty people to review my request. After 3 hours, they said the they would not be able to cover the cost, because of the "point in sale".

Basically, because I did not purchase the extended warranty, when I bought the car new they could not honour the coverage. It should not have been sold too me.
I am thinking, WHAT?! Are you saying that a person could not purchase an extended warranty after their manufacturer warranty expires?! No answer from the Warranty Supervisor.

Needless to say, I was upset. I think they did not want to cover it because the cost of the warranty and the repair bill are roughly the same. There is no way they could make any money.

I must say in this instance I partially blame myself...Why?!....Because I have promised myself that I would never EVER purchase an extended warranty. For the dealership and the warranty company, this is easy money. People will pay it and never really use it. If they do use it, the warranty people will find a way to deny coverage. I have been burned 3x by an extended warranty (on previous cars) and swore I would never ever do it again, but I thought maybe things have gotten better, let me give it a shot.

Long story short, I am now footing a $1300 repair bill for replacement of a MOP. Good news is that the extended warranty (powertrain) was $1358 dollars, so it is basically an even swap. Hopefully by Tuesday, I will have my car...

They will find whatever reasons to deny it, thats the fact for every extended warranty

Even its ur engine, they will still find some bullshit NOT to cover it.

ITs a rip off, simple as that

oh btw a MOP does not cost that much to replace. you might want to look around

Sorry for your bad experience. Look around for the parts, check the forum vendors.

I keep telling people not to get the extended warranty.
All you're doing is paying the net present value of the estimated future repair cost of the car plus the profit of the warranty company and then you still have to get past the adjusters whose job it is to limit claim exposure. Even if they approve the claim you still have to pay a fee. What a rip-off.

your beef is not with MAZDA but with the Easycare Warranty company.

Take them to court.

Thank You!

I just wanted to express my moment of "stupidity" regarding my experience.

The worse case for me, was when I had an older Eclipse Turbo AWD. The AWD system (diffs) went out and I was out of town. Purchased the car used AND I bought an extended warranty. Warranty folks denied the claim, saying that because the seals broke and fluid ran out, it was my responsibility to keep the car maintained.
I just screamed...Seriously screamed at the top of my lungs...How can I even know that this should have been maintained, when I just bought the car 6 months ago. Needless to say, I had too cash out my 401K to pay for the replacement and install of the AWD system for the car. That was roughly $2675 dollars, not including being stuck in Cali for 14 days (loss of vacation time AND a bus ride back into Phoenix).

Good News about this, Mitsubishi send out a recall notice on the very same thing. I had save my receipts and was reimbursed for the money I spent.

That was the turning point for me for extended warranties...

Yes, it is the Easycare people I am targeting...I work for the local government here and I spoke with an associate (Attorney) to get his opinion.
He says as long the company has refunded you the FULL amount, there is nothing you can really do about it. You can file a complaint with the Better Business bureau. People are researching more and more on companies and their reputation.

Right now, I am looking forward to getting my car repaired and returned. I will be looking into ordering some spare parts, so that in the event something like this happens again, I will be more prepared.

Usually the MOP leak is a seal....even so...you can pick up a used MOP for $100-200 ...last one I bought was $85......

It takes about 1 hr to install....

yep, extended warranties are definitely a rip-off. Better to save that money spent for a rainy day.

If you have the energy, report this to your state attorney general, and/or whoever regulates insurance companies where you live. IMHO, BBB is worthless - foxes guarding the henhouse.

I'm not a lawyer, but I fail to see the logic in your friend's legal opinion. Easycare sold you the policy. Unless you gave them false information, they're on the hook.

If returning your money is OK, Easycare has a golden scam in the palm of their hands. They collect premiums from customers. They keep the money from people who don't have problems. If someone does have a problem, they say "Oops - we shouldn't have sold you that," and return the amount of the original premium. Since most people do not have problems, they're keeping the lion's share as profit.

Some day they should go to Vegas and see how it works when their roulette number doesn't come up and they try to get their bet back... :-)

Well.. You actually have a good lawsuit on your hands if you didn't cancel for the refund.

It's part of the factor for Warranty companies in general. (ie: Car Insurance). My Engine replacement with a different extended warranty company came to 5400.00, while the service plan with them was 2k.

Sorry to rant, in short you should still be able to dispute this claim and get a reimbursement if you find the 'specific' area of what is covered in the listed field based on plan coverage.

Worse case scenario they also have the option to cancel the plan.

Since we're on this topic, some warranties have a 'cap' on the total amount of what they will cover during the duration.

Unfortunately it looks like this company you went with are the ones similar that decline medical coverage even though the Doctor (your case Certified Mechanic) states said work is needed, which is in clear print of what is covered under your warranty.

Take them to small claims court and force them to eat the cost. It is a hassle but it is cheap to do it this way. You can represent yourself just have your ducks in a row. Have proof that the part is dose what the warranty says is covered. ie proof that the MOP is part of the oil pump.

I got my car back.

Check her up and down. No more oil leaks...I called the dealership and they are cutting me a refund check for the FULL amount.
This will be used to pay off the repair bill I paid to get her fixed, in the first place.

I am soooo glad I have the car back.

It seems like you may have jumped the gun on that repair and I know it happens sometimes when your car is leaking or not working properly, its gets you worried and you just want to get the repair over and done with. People make irrational decisions but really that repair SHOULD NOT have cost you that much. If you take a look at Dans post and NYC's post it is not that expensive. It is great that you got your refund on your warranty but now you got ripped off on your install. For any install over $300 I would always shop around and find a good deal. But don't get me wrong sometimes a good deal isn't always the best person to do the repair. I know it is to late now but in the future just shop around before your repair so you save the most amount of money seeing how it wasn't covered under warranty.
