From what I understand only a very small subset of people have had any complaints with the short shifter. Mine has seemingly settled down and the sound has subsided (probably because it's been rubbed smooth, or because when I reseated it, it linked up better) The mod is incredible though, it should absolutely be the first mod anybody with an RX8 gets. Don't let my shifters rubbing sound turn you off from getting it.

Hehe ok that's nice to hear. It's on this way and well ... I'm excited!

I'll just get the new iPod solution from Audiolink/RPM Store and hell with the sound!

From what I see... I wouldn't even call that wear. I don't see a grove.

I totally agree... however it definitely makes a noticable rubbing sound now. Since I last re-seated it the sound is lessened, but I can only assume the little wear that it does have is indicative of the rubbing on the plastic.

third.. what is the blue stuff on the top plate and the top of the location pins?

and last. could you put in you location and mileage..

just a comment. i am had the same issue at 97k miles.. it was not the shifter.. it is the front seal in tranny going.. low oil fluid..

But can you over fill it? You know the old saying; "less is more"

Actually I do need to check the tranny oil level, but no I don't ride with my hand on the shifter... both hands on the wheel unless I'm shifting. I am in Maryland w/26k miles. I did not take the insulation out of the boot, although when I first put the shifter in some people told me it could actually make the transmission noises louder because of pressure. Thanks for the response swoope, I'll check the transmission.

What and where is this 'green' felt that everyone's talking about?

I'm about to install my Axial SS tonight and didnt find any note/explanation about this in the DIY page.

Thanks

There is soundproofing material (insulation looking stuff) in the shift boot. Because the fitment is a little bit different with the STS some people remove the material so it isn't pressing down on the shifter and causing additional noise. I left it in personally.

I loved mine it was one of the bests mods that I did. I felt bad that I sold my car with it, I should have given it to a friend of mine on here. I never took it out when it got serviced.

Thumbs up

I installed mine yesterday.
Tricky part was to get rid of these 2 clippers. Then removing the upper boot (got my fingers all dirty) by twisting the white ring.
Rest went very easy.

I should mention that my gearbox (with original shifter) is very knotchy and I have some synch problem that my dealer should take care of next month.

Since my dealer will be working on the tranny, should I bother removing the Shifter before giving him the car?

Finally, about the sound and feeling of the new shifter : it does make this little noise whenever you *touch* the gear ****. Whenever you try to remove the gear for it's current position, the noise starts.
I guess this is why removing the green sound isolator thing would help removing this sound since it's putting pressure on the shifter therefor making the noise.

Feeling : yes shorter, gears are also closer (bit confusing at the begenning) but also harder to shift.

I definitely should change the tranny oil to see if it's going to help it...

Conclusion : taking in consideration my current gears synch/clutch pedal problem, I cannot say that the new Shifter is working perfectly on my car BUT I can imagine how nice it should feel on a proper working gear box... I just can't wait to feel that!

The more I drive with it, the more I like it.

Question

I've just recently got my 8 a couple of months ago and have been going through and checking and changing things out. I checked my shifter and my bushing is completely gone, there is just a ring at the top that is free moving up and down the shaft. Do I need to order a whole new assembly or can I order just the bushing from somewhere?
