Hey, I just got the M flash today at 206 miles and had 1/4 of a tank left. I see alot of people here dont break 200 and thats with the M flash. My car is also brand new, and still had that 1/4 of a tank left. I was shifting around 5-6k rpms and kept the speed at 73 mph. Well, anyways, at 206 miles I had to drive back to the dealer to give him the final check (yep no payments for me!) and asked him about the m flash, and he just gave it to me, no questions asked. Whole thing tooka bout 15 minutes. After I got the M flash I did fill up, but I figured I still had another 30-50 miles left in the tank.

However now, with the M flash I did drive alittle speedy today and only have alittle more than 3/4 of a tank left with 30 miles this trip

I should also add that the 73 mph was on the interstate on the way home and then back to the dealer. The miles were pretty much 50/50 city/interstate driving.

the fuel gauge is not very accurate. You shouldn't judge mileage by eyeballing it.

the m flash has nothing to do with fuel improvement / management!!! trust me.....

As per Mazda, The "M" flash was designed to prevent flooding and hard starts. Not to improve gas mileage. Mazda will not alter the air/fuel ratio. It will not hold up to the new EPA standards of having catilytic converters last 120,000 miles. They might be able to develop a high flow, heat resistant catilytic converter that will handle the original tune or perhaps even more,as well as much improved gas mileage, but at what expense to both Company and consumer.

I am not too much techy about the Engine and specs. Can someone explain in Plain English what M flash does, and how can I find out if mine has M or L flash. I have an Auto transmission RX8.

I get 22/23 mpg on the average all the time.

Ditto. But mine has been edging up since I got the M flash. My last tank I got 23.89! Same exact driving habits and route to and from work. Prior to the M flash, I'd been averaging 22.33 mpg.

I have kept a log of every fillup since I bought the car. My particular 8 seems to get its best gas mileage with 93 octane gas and the DSC/TC left ON.

I have the "M" flash a few months ago and have monitored my gas mileage from purchase day 6/19/03. After several tanks I am noticing about a 1 mpg difference since the m flash on average. I also use about a 1/2 quart of oil in 3000 miles now.

Ours too- we've gone from normally getting between 240-250 before the light comes on, to 270 or so before it comes on after the m flash three weeks ago. It may not have been designed to better the mileage, but it's working anyway.

the "m" flash can eat my a$$... i really dont feel like it did anything for me.. also my gas tank can eat my a$$. i have log'd in excel every single tank of gas i have used, and the mileage since i have had my whip. i have over 4000 miles in this beotch. and have yet to have a single tank of gas break 16mpg. OH WELL.

My only noteworthy change in milage was when going from 93 octane to 89 octane:

17.23 (original pre-L flash)
17.30 (M flash)
16.77
17.22
18.27 (89 octane)

But wow, 23 mpg!!! Oh, The Promised Land... I can't imagine

I just dropped octane as well and am seeing a boost in mileage. I'll give it a few tankfuls to see if its consistent or just a fluke....

I know - my car is weird. Everyone else reports better mileage with lower octane. I guess mine has expensive taste.

All the SCCA racers running rotaries are usually upset when a track makes them buy gas at the track, they all swear they get the best HP from the cheapest gas they can buy. The engine builders varify this on the dyno.
I'm not sure what flash is in mine. I bought it 3/12/04 and have 13,300 miles on it. Have done several hyway trips and have got the following mileage.
93- octane - 80 MPH - cruise control, open hyway - 21.8
89- octane - 80 MPH - cruise control, open hyway - 22.6
89 - octane - 75 MPH - criuise control, open hyway - 23.4
Average combined (hyway to and from work and 30% city - 93 octane - 18.5
Average combined, as above - 89 octane - 19.2
Having tons of fun - 89 octane - 13.6:p who cares?
87 octane gave no advantage in mileage and it may be faster but not enough to feel it.
Old Formula car racer and the RX8 is the best handling, most nuetral street car I've ever sat in.

I'm getting similar results. I typically get around 210-230 miles with the highest grade gas. The last two tanks I did 87, and I'm getting ~30 miles more per tank than with the higher grade.

octane- in my old rx7 i was told to use 87 because it burns the fastest. not sure why the renesis is supposed to use higher octane. remember, octane is a measure of how hard the gas is to ignite, not a measure of how much energy it creates when burning. piston cars that take premium use the higher octane to allow a more advanced spark.
