Automatic V.S. Manual debate

Here is the evidence performance wise on the new 8:

There was a big difference between the 04MT and AT, but the 06+ MT and AT both have the same engine hp. AT is shown as 212hp because of the lower redline.
Now granted, the AT has larger transmission losses, so it loses WHP.
I still don't get why the RX-8, which is branded as a sports car with comforts that has 4 seats, and generally is not your hardcore sports car, has to be a manual only affair?
If I wanted a pure sports car, I'd have gone with an S2000. I got my RX-8 because it's a great handling car, way more comfortable than the S2000, can fit myself and 3 friends, looks INCREDIBLE, and cost me less when I buy it used. So if having an AT means it's more comfortable to me, and I'm buying a car for comfort, then obviously that's my choice.
What's there to argue about?

Congrats jordan for buying a MT so now the flamer anti-AT puns don'y apply to you, everyone on the forum now thinks your cool cause your can push a clutch in when you shift. Anyone that has something to add why "rx8's should all be manual" please please PLEASE realize that your comments are purely stupid. Wow your car is a second faster on the 1/4. But when a 350z pulls up and beats you, im sure you don't question "I wonder if that was an auto or manual" cuz in the end it doesn't matter cause we drive rx-8's and rx-8's....are slow.
Yeah Sioux Sioux!!!

I dont see why people care so much, MT AT whats the dif, a few horsepower so what, i have a MT but i have nothing against anyone who has an AT, Their car looks the same, costs the same, and feels the same when your going down the road.
ps. However if you have a MT you can grind your car

The first RX8 I ever drove was an AT at Mazda Rev-it-up. This was 2004, I think. I stepped on the gas, and thought, "OMG! ... so slow!". I sincerely believe that my sister's mini-van would've been faster in a straight line.
Since then I had a 350z, and now I have the RX8 (MT). I'm not going to say the MT is super fast, but at least it can get out of its own way. Now, I know there is obviously a customer for the AT. More power to you guys. I can almost understand your choice. I say this because I NEED the backseats in my car. I have kids. Lots of guys on here want the RX8 to be a PURE sports car with no backseat. I need it. I don't need a new RX7. There is only one sports car with a back seat, and it's sitting in most of our garages / driveways.

If you buy a sports car, it should be a manual. If you want an auto, get a luxury car. That is the bottom line. Sports cars are meant for constant shifting on curving courses. Auto's are meant for highway chillin. My 8 is a 6 speed, and anytime I get the chance, I take the back roads. Screw the highway!!!!

And ive talked to 3 dealerships and mechanics. But apparently im wrong? Anyway, auto is just the lazy and uncordinated in my opinion.

people its all about personal choice, i think most of us would agree that it doesnt matter as long as it makes the person happy, im happy with my AT, and really don't care for the 1 second difference on the 1/4 mile or the extra hp. its a great car regardless. but of course they will always be that one instigator...anyways this thread sux and it should be burried, no one really cares wich car is better, this forum shouldnt be about that.

Car =/= *****.
I would still be more badass than you driving a Geo Metro.
This thread can die now that I've gotten over being offended

Here's an argument, I am younger and better looking than most of the mid-life crisis 8 owners on this board(no offense to my buddies, just the AT bashers) and I guarantee I pull more women in my AUTO than all of them. Everyone I've met(other than 8 owners) still think my car is absolutely sick/beautiful, they love the paddle shifters. I do have to say this for myself though, at least I was knowledgeable to get the sport package on the AT instead of the base.
So give it a rest, this isn't a big ***** contest, it's an RX-8 forum....and at the end of the day.. AT or MT..IT'S STILL AN RX-8.

Yea, for some reason it just keeps going.
For all you guys that say the AT is slow you should just ride with one of us that enjoy the AT for what it is and have corrected the short coming of reduced HP. Talk to Easy_E1, 09 Factor and many others that have shown the AT is not a problem but an asset.

While I agree that the transmission choice is, at least initially, a preference thing, the sheer fact of the matter is that the '04/'05 RX-8 - SPECIFICALLY - is horribly underpowered by comparison to anything in its class in its AT derivation and is further humbled by the relatively sluggish and erratic behavior of the transmission itself.
The later 6-port/6-speed version is, unfortunately, only incrementally better.
The AT equipped RX-8 is still a fine handling car and the 6/6 version is adequate for just about anything "normal".
However, I defy anyone to directly compare AT and MT equipped, equally modded (or completely stock) versions of same-year RX-8s and come to the conclusion that they are comparable in performance and/or drivability.
I certainly respect the AT owners - many are very enthusiastic about enhancing the performance of their vehicles just as much as the MT owners (maybe more so because of the perceived "handicap"), but there just isn't any way to view the two version on equal terms.
With all due respect, I highly doubt ANY of you would refer to the AT as an asset with a straight face.
While all three of the vehicles you are referring to are significantly faster than they were stock and probably significantly faster than the MT models were stock, even as they approach the razor's edge of their performance capacity the AT models are still 30% or more behind their MT brethren.
I might suggest that you take a ride in one of the 300 - 400 HP 6-ports for a comparison.

[QUOTE=Phil's 8;3084386]AT RX8s get bested by the stock 350z? Gee I did not know that

Your welcome to come ride in my AT, then again you could be afraid to do that cuz then you'd be shown that your statements are wrong (I kinda wanted to say talking out of your *** but that might have been taken for an insult)

My tranny is one of the most abused ATs on the road. Never have a problem with it yet that was not caused by outside influences (tuning). I know it's not bullet proof but with all the complaints I hear about the MTs tranny and clutch I think I am happy I made the choice of going AT. Silver Surfer I certainly hope you are not one of the dysfunctional service advisers working for the local dealer in Vegas.... Lazy and uncoordinated???? Well lazy I can live with cuz I am defiantly lazy but you may wish to come drive with me before you would say uncoordinated.
???Huh, That last sentence was not mine!
It was LB17(See above^)

I am fully satified with my AT.
