ATTN: For members who have traded in their 8s
I did a search and did not seem to find anything about actual RX-8 trade-in values.
The reason I am interested is because I am looking to switch into either a BMW 135i or 335i pretty soon. I also want to get the most for my vehicle when the time comes. My RX-8 is up for sale privately but if I will be able to receive a figure that is close enough to my asking price from a dealership, I'll go through with a trade-in.
I am playing the waiting game now to sell my car but I would not mind taking back a little less to get into the bimmer.
From a dealership, I believe I can get $18,000 for my '05 Winning Blue 6 spd. GT w/nav, appearance package, rotary accent package, rear wing spoiler 40k with a little negotiation (correct me if I'm wrong)
So anyone who has traded in their 8...tell us how much you got for it from the stealerships TECHNICALLY speaking (on paper)

You'd probably be lucky to get 18k private party let alone on a trade in. The only way to find out is to go to a dealer and see what they'll give you or find out what Carmax will cut you a check for.

thats surprising...because i've been offered very close to that amount from a Mazda dealership and I am confident I can negotiate up to 18k
When I worked as a salesperson at a Mazda dealership about a half a year back I was offered a 2008 GT w/Nav Mazdaspeed 3 for my car + 4k out the door...and I couldn't let go of the 8 for that
Thanks for the idea topgear8...but I know one of the two sold their 8 beforehand and I do not know who the other one is on the forum

...well I know that...i think i would be expecting more than 18k for a $36000 car that is only 3 years old if i didn't know that lol
Oh and Ike...the reason I expect more than that from a private buyer is because I have a fair amount of extras along with the car
thanks for all the answers guys...maybe I got the best offer from the Mazda dealership and I should just see what offers I get now

IMO if they give you 18k on your trade in then they will probably add 2k - 3k on the back end. They may give you a little more on the trade in if they believe you are going to finance with them. Banks offer incentives (money) to the dealership and salesperson if they can get you to finance with them (bank).

04AT with 31k on it and "new" engine just put in.
Used the "s" plan for the Miata which is invoice price.
Got 12.5k trade in. Avg. trade in of the car is 11-13k and this is at a Mazda dealer, some dealers don't even want to deal with the 8.
No way will you get 18k "for real" out of it. Sorry, but good luck though and let us know how it goes.

Well try it. If you can get it great. If not so be it. Get the 335i. They are nice cars. Too bad they are also very common where I am. It's just another random BMW...

The 8 will rapidly go down in value until its about 5 years old. Most cars hit a ceiling of around 10-12k. At that point people will buy it. They will still depreciate after 5 years but at a much lower rate.
Some kid who can't afford anything remotely new is going to want an RX8, 350z mustang GT so you will have alot more buyers once it gets cheap enough so it levels off.
Most of a car's depreciation happens in the first 3 years IMO.

I have an 04 GT with 49K when I tried to trade it in a year ago at the dealership I worked for and the GM was a family friend and I got offered 12,500 after negotiating (hence why I didnt trade it in)

Most dealerships will quote you a high trade in value and then get you on the back end with the interest rate when you finance/lease the new car. The interest rate is the most important thing to negociate in my opinion. People talk too much about the sticker price, thinking interest is what will save you the money.
Unless you pay cash!

Yea, but the misconception is that half the time you really dont get 'screwed'. If you pay like $1000 below book for an RX8 and get a nice deal and own it right and the dealership makes $3000 profit, that doesnt mean you got screwed. That means the dealership got the car for cheap and gave you a good deal and got a nice commission. But a lot of people think the more money a dealership makes the more you got screwed, in some cases thats true but not always. Everyone needs to get a good deal right?

Be careful though. They may offer you $18k trade in asa ploy to make you feel like you got a good deal, but in reality the car is just jacked up higher then you could have gotten it for had you purchased without a trade. I strongly recommend you negotiate the price of the car FIRST, then throw in the trade.
I know, dealerships hate this tactic, but when I traded in my 01 S2000, they wanted to do a trade in assessment first, and I mentioned the trade in would pursuade me to either keep my 01, or get a new one. Mentioning that, they did what many dealers will do. They offered me an ABSOLUTELY SUPER trade, but then tried selling me car for close to MSRP, even though this car was selling at invoice most of the time. I went to another dealership and they didn't pull that stunt.
Just keep eyes open, get the price of the car FIRST, then the trade, and make sure your numbers match what you are willing to pay.

Well, today I tried to trade in my RX-8 at a Ford dealer, because I was set on buying a new Fusion. I went in armed with my KBB printout, which suggested a trade-in value of $13,200 ("Good" condition) for my '04 GT with 49k miles. Imagine my surprise when my salesman came back with an offer of $8500!!! After expressing my disappointment and telling him I wouldn't accept less than $12,500, he told me to give them a couple hours while they "shopped" the car around to different dealerships and auction sites. They called me back after 3 hours and said that the best purchase offer they could find was for $10k! Even when they contacted the people most interested in Mazda vehicles, they were told that these cars were going for $10.5k-11k, and that at that price they weren't even interested.
Now I have bought 2 cars through this salesman, and I know he will do whatever it takes to get me to buy a car through him, so I truly believe the dealership gave its best effort to get a good price on the car. There is no room for negotiation on the new car purchase (employee pricing), so it all comes down to what I can get for the trade-in. It seems that this is a very undesirable vehicle right now. It probably has a lot to do with the very poor fuel economy and reputation (well-earned, I might add) of reliability problems.
Whatever the case, I am very disappointed right now. Not only am I being offered very low trade-in value, but the car itself is starting to act up again now that the warm weather has returned... I feel trapped.
