another one bites the dust - engine blown at 82k

Engine blew on me on Saturday. 82k miles on the car, always well-maintained. Always taken daily to the redline, always oil levels maintained using Castrol 5W20 dino. Bought my car in '04 when they came out.

Bye bye RX-8, bye bye Mazda.

Anyone in Houston want to buy a nice roller?

Where would you like me to move this thread?

Doesn't really belong here, but I'm not sure what you are going for. Classifieds? Tech? Discussion? Troubleshooting?

Yeah I'm really sorry too. Lot of great memories with this car.

I couldn't post in the general forum because I guess I don't have enough posts.

What's a fair price for a roller with everything else working? Car has cloth, AC, DSC/TSC/LSD, manual, Mazdaspeed wing, sunroof

You have enough posts, it just takes about an hour after the first time you re-log in after April 26th

It only blocks people with less than 30 days AND less than 10 posts, though people need to re-log in and wait about an hour for the software to automatically recognize that. Flaws of forum software.

I'll move it to Discussion.

82k is not so bad, would going with a thicker oil not been a better idea?

It depends on the method of failure. If it was bearing failure, then yes, a thicker oil would have helped.

If it was carbon caking, sear wear, overheating, oil control ring failure, or seal breakage, no, a thicker oil wouldn't have mattered.

It was a massive coolant failure. Still, I am surprised fatal damage was done so quickly.

What do you guys do with this sort of thing? I've got it at the dealer right now and I'm not willing to put a new engine in it, so should I try to sell it to the dealer as salvage? Will they just rip me off? I don't have the time or space to part the car out.

Just sell it as is locally for whatever you can get, someone will buy it. My buddy might be interested, LMK.

Do we have a sense of how many failures are related to those coolant seals?

Do they fail as often?

Just curious...

Coolant system failure killed your motor?

This is something I am extremely interested in and I've posted a thread regarding coolant related failures, even if the alleged or claimed cause was compression:

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tec...licone-238638/

What kind of coolant did you use?

How often did you flush and replace your coolant?

You're in a hot climate...is your car an automatic or manual?

Any more specifics on the diagnosis and how it was made, with details of what parts or components failed, would be greatly appreciated.

Does a bear **** in the woods?
Of course they will.

They will buy the car from you for for about $2500, and stuff a replacement motor into it for about $1k, and sell the car easily for about $8500, making them a tidy $5k profit.

You should finance the engine replacement and sell the car if you don't want it anymore instead of giving the dealer a $5k profit.

BC.
