some people put on car bras for canyon/autox etc where there's a higher chance of debris or cones smacking your front end. not a bad idea considering how much they protect your paint, and who cares if it looks bad for a few hours while you're driving, its not your problem if the outside of your car looks ugly...other people will be seeing it. im not into spending a couple hundred bucks repainting my bumper every 2 years from a lot of road chips and crap messing up my paint.

I think carbras have a valid role on longer country trips and/or autocrossing. However, I agree that those who leave them on all the time miss out on appreciating their car's looks.
