There is even a massive thread regarding octane, what it does and how it affects the engine, and your post clearly shows your idea of what it does and what it means is not at all accurate.

The short answer is that NO it is not "all about the gas". The gas is simply 1 factor in the overall dynamic of the engine. It is possible to get bad gas and possible to use gas at a lower-than-recommended octane. The definition of "Premium" also changes depending on where you are, as I have personally seen Premium be 94, 93, 91, and 89, depending on what I was in the US at the time. Some 8s run fine on 87, most do not. Shell V-power is generally liked, but not really because of the octane rating, but because it is one of the only commonly available gas grades/brands that does not have ethanol mixed into it.

Plus, my manual says the minimum recommended octane in the US is 91 - whatever that means technically.

But that's pretty much hard to find here in NY, so most of the time I end up using 93. Most gas stations where I live only have 87 (regular), 89 (mid grade), 93 (premium)

The few gas stations that have 91 around here call it "premium", and the 93 they call it "ultra."

Very confusing. At the end, whatever is higher than 89 is what i sue

What happens if I use 87 octane, use synthetic oil, pour in a bottle of rubing alcohol, plus a bottle of actetone, get a typhoon cold air intake, add a little electric fan thingy I saw in the internet to supercharge my throttle body, put magnets on my fuel line and add V-TEC to my LS1 engine swap? can I drag race then? and will I get better gas milage?

just thought I would add all the other questions people ask so we can get them all out of the way in one thread...
