airbags and kid seats
My wife just brought up a point to me...
Isn't the reason that kids seats go in the back to protect them from passenger side airbags?
Would the rear airbags be dangerous to kids in kid seats in the back?

Insanely Yellow
The rear "side" bags are "head curtain" bags that are only 3" thick when inflated and protect adult occupant's heads from whacking the side windows in a crash. They are above the level of a typical kid's head, and they don't come rocketing out several feet like the passenger side front airbag does. They are safe back there. Not a problem.

What I meant to say is that some Mazdas, like the 3, have sensors that detect when a smaller person or child or no one is in the front seat, and adjust the pax airbag deployment appropriately. I'm still trying to determine whether the 8 has this feature.

No issue
Provided the seat is appropriately afixed and is in the front position- not rear facing. On some infant seats, if rear facing- in the back seat,it is NOT recomended as the upper portion of the seat may be in path of deploying bag. Incidently- our Mazda bags are supplied by Takata, of Japan- who also sells to Ford- they are of the "Environmenatlly Friendly", or what we call Green inflators. design- (no Sodium Azide)/ they are amonst the worlds highest quality of airbag/sensors available on todays market.

The only thing I can add to this is that the owners manual tells one not to allow children to lean against the windows as they would be in the path of the deploying curtain airbags.

(my friends got bored on a long car ride, that's my explanation for how I know this.)
