Okay I put in 89 octane in the car for the first time. the things I have noticed is my rpm jumped at idle to about 1000 and 1100, also more torque low end but felt less powerful in the higher rpm. So far seems like my fuel economy pay me slightly better, I normally got 50km to a quarter tank but I just drove 40km and its in between the full and the quarter but slightly higher ( my driving did not change ) , now I'm not sure if its all in my head but I would like the know what others have experienced.

No noticeable difference for me (vs. 91).
The higher RPM doesn't really make sense to me, at least not in relation to the octane rating.
The fuel gauge is pretty inaccurate, so you can't really jump to conclusion just by looking at it. Wait until you fill up again, then you'll be able to see if there is any measurable difference in the mileage. Doubtful though.

I HATE SPEEDBUMPS!
I'm not sure about what your doing. Do not experiment something and you might regret it. RX8's uses premium gas for better performance. Do not sacrifice your engine for cheap gas.

I hear lots of stories regarding 89 and people use it and nothing really bad happens to the motor, just experimenting, see if mileage has an effect

its more of a curiosity thing, see if it makes a difference, however up here in canada the difference is about 6 bucks a tank between 89 and 91, so filling up once a week, i adds up, but like i said wondering if there is a noticeable difference

well I did a quarter tank and got 65km out of it.. so 15km more, but i'll know for sure once i hit the half mark and fill her up and see exactly what I got.

well if you get less miles outta it, then you really not saving anything.

relax buddy, just experimenting, some people said it improved their mileage and made their car run a little better.. so i'm trying it out.. so far i got 15km better to a quarter.

lol its all good i forgive you. im tired of people complaining about mpg aswell, I get speeches from everyone when they ask me how much I get to a tank and once I tell them, they go nuts telling me how I should get a different car blah blah.. I was just bored so got curious... they gas did improve but I think I am making it by driving slower lol and mentally hoping it does haha.

I usually get 50-60 miles(or 80-96 km) to a quarter tank of 91 octane with mixed city driving. You getting 40 or even 50 km to a quarter seems to say theres some issues with your car.

yeah i know, its very weird. i also hear a chirp coming from my car at idle, thats also new i heard could be the coils. I ordered a obd2 with bluetooth and once that comes in i'm gonna see whats up with the car

running the car at 7-8krpm..on 3rd gear ..120km/hr..on hiway..in less than a minute i've start to loss power...it feels like the car's choked..then engine power back when the speed go down around 100km/hr..
I run the car this way most of the time(2-3 mins then shift to nxt gear) with 91 octane and no problem...

I love how bothered people get over this topic. Firstly, no one forces you to comment in a thread. Secondly, if Mazda put a sticker on the fuel door that said "87 OCTANE ONLY", people would thinking running 91 is stupid and that anyone running it is just being a rich arrogant *****.
I run 89 with no problems and mildly better fuel economy than on premium, but with a noticeable power deficit. Running it won't hurt your engine. My Mazda dealer told me flat out that they put the cheap **** in every car they get on their lot. So show me an RX8 with an engine that failed because of cheap gas.

I did notice an increase in my fuel economy, compared to 91 i was getting 60miles on half a tank and with the 89 Im getting around 85miles.. but i'll know for sure once I refuel. Yes I also noticed the decrease in power at the high end rpm. Also whats weird is my traction light goes on once I get wheel spin but it just stays on after lol..

lol not okay with it, just stating what i am experiencing with the lower octane, next fill up i will go back to 91 and see if i can achieve the same mileage, i have other issues now to worry about.. car is chirping at idle ( could be the coils ) and when i loose traction my traction light comes on and stays on ( not sure why ) so i will deal with those. I did get wider tires maybe the ecu is confused or who knows.

Because I have nowhere to exercise the power living in a city, and it doesn't affect the handling at all. I bought the car because it handles well as a daily driver, not for the power, since even at peak performance, it hardly makes any horsepower. I mean, 230? Really? I can stand to make only 210-220.
