lawl my car just got more exotic lawl

I figured the flood was caused by a rotary-inexperienced person.

My question to greene76 was to find out whether he was one of those people who had traditionally been careful in avoiding shutting the engine off cold, or whether he was one of the individuals who don't believe that flooding is a problem and doesn't avoid cold cut-offs.

I guess his next choice of car is limited to Honda or Toyota. I like Honda as much as the next person, but that's gotta suck.

Yep...I would think that the originator of this thread could even sue Mazda for upwards of $10 million if he wanted to. HE can't be responsible for taking care of his car...that's just silly. [/sarcastic comments]

The car/engine requires some special care, if you decide to buy it knowing this then you take the risk of flooding it. However I do think there are some basic things Mazda could do to help.

How hard would it be to have an indicator like they have on diesel motors (a warning indicator comes up after you turn the key one notch to wait to start) that says “Engine Cold” and then switches to a tack at 3000 RPM and 10Sec. Yes you can just look at the temp gauge but Americans are lazy as a rule and how hard is it to add a light on the dash.

I'd say it's more like someone suing the door lock company because they locked the keys in the house.... or suing the door manufacturer because the wind blew it shut.

Maybe they should sue the oil comapny becuase their fuel caused the problem. I think they should sue their parents for bringing them into this world.

Look, there's plenty of reasons to not want to keep this car. Be honest with yourself and don't try to act so indignant about an issue you knew about and is technically your fault. :-/

I mean look, you should've just said, "I'm trading my car in for a car with better gas mileage and doesn't flood. My mom borrowed my car and flooded the engine, I need a car without quirks like that."

The whole "OMG! My car betrayed me! Left my mom for dead!" attitude you're putting out is pretty over the top. (I'm exaggerating, but that's what I feel like you're trying to do.)

everyone is assuming the car flooded because of a short trip shut off etc. i can think of many reasons any car with 50k miles could flood- needs new plugs, battery weak from ligth sbeing left on etc etc . so it may not have even been a "rotary " flood just a car flood

my car is taking a few seconds to start when i crank it now i think im gonna trade it in!!!!!! oh wait theres a tsb for a new bigger better battery and better spark plugs i think ill just go get that done!!!

It's no big deal... anyone who doesn't want to follow the cold-engine shutdown procedure simply shouldn't drive an RX8. Good luck with whatever you get!

did you forget about all the rotary cars mazda came out before the 8?

I'm 21...this is my first rotary...and i've had no problem with my car ever flooding. It's also not that hard for me to have explained to the people in my household not to shut off the car when its cold...and guess what...it has never happened. One day my car was at home while I was away, and a possum got into the garage...even my neighbor...which I told once about the rotary engine...left the car on after he pulled the car out of the garage as my mom didn't trust driving my car (stick shift). Like I said...I don't think twice about whether or not to ever shut my car off when I have to move it a small difference. Even when I goto just get gas (my house is less than a mile from the gas station)...I let it warm up slightly in my driveway.

my body shop was supposed to have my bumper painted by today but they didnt and now im not getting my car back till monday....screw this im trading it in!!

This is absolutely right.... I have never shut down this car cold and my she flooded at 40,000km and needed a tow. Got a new battery, plugs and a new set of coils - under warranty. Then she flooded again at 49,000km and again needed a tow. This time I got another set of coils - done under warranty again. Then at 49500km the battery light came on and stayed on while I was cruising on the highway. This time I got a new alternator ( which may have been the problem all along) - also under warranty. Yes it's been a hassle, but there are just too many upsides to this car.

Sports cars always need more attention than any Camry Beater. Ask any "true sports car owner, not a Civic sports car wannabe" that do they need proper maintence. Even Civics (I mean those wannabes) pay special attentions to their cars.

but I guess sports cars is not for you. Go buy yourself and your mom a Prius. It gives you great mileage and lots of repair bills (way more than the 8) can give ya down the road.

I'm not sure what you're getting at.... according to my friends who owned RX7s, they were also susceptible to flooding (when shutdown cold without being revved first).

we all understands the "required" caution to a rotary engine. but at least we just wont whine like greene76 did. From his words he just sound like one of those"typical I need a accord/camry" kind of guy out there who doesnt deserves to have a special sports car.

I bought a 2004 with around 23,500 miles on it about 2 weeks ago. I talked to the rotary expert at the local dealership today. He's very familiar with the car I bought. He heard me "rev" when I turned the car off, but told me that he's installed protections against flooding. For this car, he recommends only taking additional precautions in cold weather (not something we get a lot of down here in Pensacola). I was glad to hear that he had done the work necessary to update the car. Naturally, I hope he's right.

Yes... I do the same... The other day I pulled the 8 out of the garage to wash it and wax it.... I left the car running until it warmed up, then turn the engine off.....

It is not really that hard....I am also a first rotary owner, and to me it is actually very cool to take all these precautions with my 8... it makes me feel unique when I tell my friends about the things to do and watch for with my car...
NO OTHER CAR currently in production is this unique :)

49k aint bad.. mine flooded at 10k.. now im at 14k and about ready to sell it for somethin else :)
